Sarah PalinEven as Democrats won a majority of governorships, Republican Sarah Palin beat former Democratic Gov. Tony Knowles to keep the state's executive office in the hands of the Republicans. Palin, who unseated Gov. Frank Murkowski in the primary, will become the ninth female governor in office, tying an earlier record.

After a rocky first term, Republican Gov. Frank Murkowski lost his chance at a second try for Alaska's governor's mansion. Just two hours after polls closed Tuesday, Murkowski conceded defeat and pledged to support the winner, former Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin.

Alaska's Murkowski Facing Challenging Primary
Alaska's Gov. Frank Murkowski faces a primary election for his second term. Polls show the former senator with a positive rating of only about 20 percent in his own party. Murkowski has been criticized by many as being too close to the oil industry, and his primary challengers are both running on their plans to renegotiate unpopular deals with the industry.
