Three Democrats Compete to Challenge Republican
Nominee After 15 years of Republican control, Massachusetts Democrats
have a strong chance of winning back the state's governorship. Incumbent Gov.
Mitt Romney, has decided not to seek re-election, fueling rumors that he plans
to run for president in 2008. Leading up to the Sept. 19 Democratic primary,
first-time candidate Deval Patrick is besting contenders, state Attorney General
Tom Reilly and venture capitalist Chris Gabrieli. Based on a Zogby and Wall Street
Journal poll from July 24 all three Democrats could defeat Republican candidate
Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey by at least 15 points, with a 4 point margin of error. This
shift in support from Republican governorship to Democratic appears to be a reaction
to Healey's close association to the current governor. While it looks like the
Democrats may regain the governorship, a recent ballot measure approved by state
legislation will offer an amendment to ban same-sex marriage in the state's constitution.
This move, similar to elections in previous years from other states, is an effort
to bring out the conservative and Republican vote.
