Key Race: Maryland Governor

November 7, 2006

Democrat O'Malley Defeats Republican Ehrlich

Two-term
Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley defeated incumbent Gov.
Robert Ehrlich, reclaiming the Maryland governor's office
for the Democrats. Ehrlich had been the first Republican
governor of Maryland since the 1960s. O'Malley ran on his
record as mayor, emphasizing Baltimore's reduced violent
crime rate during his tenure. But Ehrlich claimed that O'Malley
had failed to deliver on his 2000 campaign promise to reduce
homicides in the city to less than 175 per year.

Baltimore Mayor O'Malley
Takes on Incumbent Gov. Ehrlich
Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich and Democratic Baltimore
Mayor Martin O'Malley are facing off in a highly contested
campaign for the state's executive seat.
Ever since Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan dropped
out of the Democratic primary race in late June, O'Malley
has been unopposed as a candidate to take on the incumbent
governor.
No Republicans ran against Ehrlich.
The gubernatorial race took a back seat in Maryland's primary
election on Sept. 12, when candidates for both parties vied
for the nominations for various state and national positions.
With the primary now out of the way, O'Malley and Ehrlich
likely will ramp up fundraising and advertising campaigns
to try to persuade Marylanders for their vote. And each
is expected to tout his achievements in the areas of health
care, crime prevention and education.
