Trash
May Be Tipping Point in Closely Fought House Race

As incumbent Rep. Jim Gerlach, R-Pa., and Democrat Lois
Murphy battle in a suburban Philadelphia race seen as many
as a bellwether in the fight for control of the House, analysts
say the race may be decided not by war and the economy,
but by trash.

Democrats Funnel Money
to Murphy in Close House Race
As the race to control the U.S. House heats up, Democrats
from Pennsylvania are pouring money into the campaign of
Lois Murphy as she face a rematch against U.S. Rep. Jim
Gerlach, who defeated her by 6,000 votes two years ago.
Murphy, a lawyer who has worked for several abortion rights
groups, raised some $740,000 in the last three months, according
to officials within her campaign. That number trumps Gerlach's
total of $450,000 for the same period.
Another worry among Gerlach's supporters is the bulk of
his money came from one fundraising event in March, whereas
Murphy appears to have a steady stream of funds.
“For an incumbent who was already considered to be among
the most vulnerable in the country, falling behind in cash
on hand is a serious blow,” Murphy's campaign spokesman
Mark Nevins told the Reading Eagle.
However, Gerlach's campaigners said although fundraising
has been difficult with a competitive Senate race and expensive
governor's contest, they are pleased with the amount raised
so far.
“There are more statewide Republicans running for office
this year than in most years, so fundraising has become
a lot of tougher for Republicans in Pennsylvania this year,”
Mark Campbell, the political director of Gerlach's re-election
effort, said. “That having been said, we are phenomenally
happy with the success that we've had.”
The two face off in one of the most competitive districts
in the nation in the suburbs of Philadelphia and both campaigns
are expected to spend millions before the votes are cast
in November.
