Pennsylvania's
8th District a Fight to the Finish
High-profile appearances and low-blow campaigning play prominently
in Pennsylvania's 8th District where Republican Rep. Mike
Fitzpatrick tries to defend his seat from political newcomer
Patrick Murphy.
The close competition has prompted each party to send heavy-hitters
to bolster support. In October, First lady Laura Bush traveled
to Pennsylvania to support Fitzpatrick, promoting him as
"a passionate advocate for families in the 8th District."
President Clinton visited Bucks County to campaign for Murphy,
asking constituents, "Do we got a great candidate or what?"

Democrats Target Republican Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick
In the suburbs north of Philadelphia, freshman Rep. Mike
Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., is fighting to defend his House seat
in Pennsylvania's 8th District from Democrat Patrick Murphy,
an Iraqi war veteran and opponent of the war.
Fitzpatrick's campaign has focused largely on his accomplishments
at the local level during his two years as the district's
representative with an emphasis on his independence from
President Bush. Murphy, on the other hand, is eager to draw
attention to the war and problems he sees with the Bush
administration's policies.
