Iraq
Dominates Senate Races in Rhode Island, Connecticut
Two moderate incumbents in New England, Sens. Lincoln Chafee,
R-R.I., and Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., are fighting re-election
battles against challengers who accuse them of giving too
much support to President Bush's policy in Iraq. Chafee
won a tight primary race and now faces former State Attorney
General Sheldon Whitehouse. Lieberman, who lost the Democratic
primary over his support for the war, is leading in the
polls as an Independent candidate.

Lieberman Cleared to Run for Reelection
After suffering defeat in the Democratic primary to anti-war
candidate Ned Lamont, Sen. Joe Lieberman was cleared by
the Connecticut secretary of state Wednesday to appear on
November's general election ballot as a candidate of a new
party, the Connecticut for Lieberman Party.
Lieberman submitted more than the 7,500 necessary signatures
to appear as an independent and decided to form his own
party, a move that will secure a better position on the

On
Eve of Primary, Connecticut Contest is Too Close to Call
Fueled by Democrats' anger at incumbent Senator Joe Lieberman's
support for the war in Iraq and other Bush administration
policies, voters in Connecticut have flocked to insurgent
candidate Ned Lamont. Polls that once had the millionaire
Lamont as a long-shot, now have the first-time candidate
ahead of Lieberman going into Tuesday's vote, but, as Gwen
Ifill reports, the campaign is still far from over.
