Lieberman Wins, Will Vote with Democrats

Sen. Joe LiebermanSen. Joseph Lieberman will maintain his seat in the Senate for another six years --this time, though, as an independent. After losing decisively to businessman and anti-Iraq war candidate Ned Lamont in the Democratic primary, Lieberman sailed to victory over Lamont and Republican Alan Schlesinger. Lieberman has pledged to vote with Democrats.

Iraq Dominates Senate Races in Rhode Island, Connecticut
Two moderate incumbents in New England, Sens. Lincoln Chafee, R-R.I., and Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., are fighting re-election battles against challengers who accuse them of giving too much support to President Bush's policy in Iraq. Chafee won a tight primary race and now faces former State Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse. Lieberman, who lost the Democratic primary over his support for the war, is leading in the polls as an Independent candidate.

Lieberman Cleared to Run for Reelection
After suffering defeat in the Democratic primary to anti-war candidate Ned Lamont, Sen. Joe Lieberman was cleared by the Connecticut secretary of state Wednesday to appear on November's general election ballot as a candidate of a new party, the Connecticut for Lieberman Party.

Lieberman submitted more than the 7,500 necessary signatures to appear as an independent and decided to form his own party, a move that will secure a better position on the ballot. He will face Lamont and Republican Alan Schlesinger on Nov. 7.

Lamont Discusses Why He Won Democratic Primary
Ned Lamont, the cable millionaire whose campaign garnered support among Democrats angry with incumbent Joseph Lieberman's support of war in Iraq, narrowly defeated the three-term senator Tuesday.

Lamont garnered 52 percent of the vote compared to Lieberman's 48 percent.

In a blistering concession speech, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., denounced the Lamont campaign as "more about insults, than ideas," and said he would continue his campaign as an "independent Democrat." His campaign filed paperwork Wednesday to run as an independent in the fall general campaign.

Fueled by Democrats' anger at incumbent Senator Joe Lieberman's support for the war in Iraq and other Bush administration policies, voters in Connecticut have flocked to insurgent candidate Ned Lamont. Polls that once had the millionaire Lamont as a long-shot, now have the first-time candidate ahead of Lieberman going into Tuesday's vote, but, as Gwen Ifill reports, the campaign is still far from over.

The frontrunner was scheduled to work the laid-back crowd at the Goshen Jazz Festival in northwestern Connecticut. But, uh, no one had bothered to tell the Goshen Jazz Festival. So Ned Lamont, who arrived at the event in a red convertible with the top down, had no one to talk to when he arrived, except for the tight little scrum of reporters gathered by the side of the road.
