McCaskill Emerges Victorious in Heated Senate Race

Claire McCaskill, DemocratDemocratic candidate Claire McCaskill, who won her bid for U.S. Senate Wednesday morning, told a cheering crowd, "We heard the voices of Missourians tonight and they said, 'We want change.' They have said, 'We want accountability.'"

She defeated Republican Sen. Jim Talent in a race that highlighted the stem cell debate due to a voter referendum.

Election Ads, Responses Take Negative Turn
In the final stretch before Nov. 7 midterm elections, some campaigns ads have turned negative while others have elicited a fury of partisan attacks. In Missouri, actor Michael J. Fox, who has Parkinson's Disease, appeared in an ad for Democratic Senate candidate Claire McCaskill urging voters to support her position on stem cell research -- an ad that drew criticism from conservative host Rush Limbaugh and garnered nationwide attention.

Stem Cell Amendment at Center of Missouri Senate Race
In November, Missouri residents will vote on an amendment that would allow state scientists to conduct any stem cell research permitted under federal law. Both Republican incumbent Sen. Jim Talent, who opposes it, and his challenger Democrat Claire McCaskill, who supports it, are using the issue to motivate voters in their Senate campaigns.
