Seventy four down, 25 to Go in Thompson's Tour of All Iowa's Counties

Former Wisconsin GOP Gov. Tommy Thompson continued his Winnebago tour across Iowa last week, reaching county No. 74 toward his goal of visiting each of the state’s 99 counties by the Aug. 11 Ames straw poll.
Apparently the “all Winnebago, all the time” schedule has taken its toll, since Thompson then took most of this week off. But for those worried he may not hit the remaining 25, worry not, he returns to the road on Saturday. His schedule that day is typical of the trip: two breakfasts, a lunch and two ice cream socials in five different Iowa towns, then a fund raiser that night. Although former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has been leading in recent Iowa polls of Republican candidates, Thompson told the blog Pajamas media that he’ll be “shocked” if he doesn’t win the straw poll, saying that his long record as governor of Wisconsin is well-known in the neighboring state.
“Just about every audience I have somebody that knows me, … has a relative in Wisconsin that knows me, or lived in Wisconsin while I was governor,” he said.
