Top McCain Team Out as Campaign Purge Continues
Email This
Arizona Sen. John McCain’s campaign manager Terry Nelson stepped down Tuesday morning along with his chief strategist John Weaver, days after McCain laid off 50 staffers due to a lackluster fundraising quarter.
McCain said in a statement that the two offered their resignations, “which I accepted with regret and deep gratitude for their dedication, hard work and friendship.
Rick Davis, McCain’s 2000 presidential campaign manager, will replace Nelson. The Associated Press reported that anonymous McCain officials said Nelson was fired. The Washington Post reported that Nelson and Weaver resigned “after the candidate erupted after concluding that his top-level advisers had mismanaged the operation.”
According to the Politico, Mark Salter — McCain’s chief of staff for 18 years and the co-author of McCain’s books — also resigned.

Good - McCain's image as a "straight talker" has been a farce for 5+ years. He's played the "fight the terrorists" card with regards the idiocy in Iraq, and buddied up to the likes of Jerry Falwell - all while still carrying the banner of a "political maverick" above the fray. It's a pleasure to watch his campaign self destruct.
Crash and burn. I'd feel almost bad for him except he's gone so far from where he had my support seven years ago...the GOP machine was rigged against him then as it is now, no matter what defenseless comments he makes about the war or praise he belatedly shows for the "agents of intolerance" : Falwell, Robertson and James Dobson. He should take his 30 pieces of silver and retire to the desert.
