In the wake of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, presidential hopeful Rep. Dennis Kucinich,, D-Ohio, issued a statement praising Bhutto, with whom he had met several times in the past, WKYC-TV reported.
“Benazir Bhutto represented a courageous effort to bring principles of liberty to Pakistan. She was truly dedicated to the people of Pakistan,” Kucinich said. He also took the opportunity to call for a change in U.S. behavior toward the region. “This is a very dangerous moment for the world … The United States must change its policy direction in the region. It must stop adding fuel to the fire.”
Recently, Kucinich highlighted his calls for election reform by offering to sell several of the voting machines used in the 2000 election in Florida, according to a story by news.com.au. The machines, which can be purchased on the Kucinich campaign’s Official Online Campaign Store, sell for $219.95 each and are advertised as “containing actual chads.” They also include a letter personally signed by Kucinich. According to a recent poll by IndependentPrimary.Com, 76.7 percent of independents prefer Dennis Kucinich out of all the Democratic candidates. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, came in first on the Republican side with 93 percent of the votes. Separately, an online straw poll by the Virginia Democratic Party also shows Kucinich in the lead with 30 percent of the vote as of Dec. 25, in front of New York Sen. Hillary Clinton’s 27 percent and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama’s 14 percent, AfterDowningStreet.com.
The congressman is currently campaigning in New Hampshire, which will hold its primary contest on Jan. 8.
