Former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson criticized Congress this week after the Senate approved more war funding, saying it strengthened his resolve to become president because the current Congress can’t get anything done.
“Just last night the United States Senate gave the president $70 billion more to continue this war … without any restraint, without any timetable to reduce troops, basically a blank check,” he told students at Alvirne High School, reported the Associated Press.
He released a new ad this week that is sharply critical of the top three Democratic candidates’ stances on Iraq.
Richardson has made several statements at debates imploring Democrats not to turn negative on each other. The Los Angeles Times calls his new ad “the first spot to end the politeness that has dominated the Democrats’ campaign advertising in Iowa.”
His campaign is spending $174,180 to run the new ad in Iowa and an additional $15,000 in New Hampshire.
But new polling numbers suggest the ad might not be enough. In a Washington Post/ABC poll of Iowans likely to vote in the Democratic caucus, Richardson fell three points to 8 percent. At the same time last month, he was in double digits, though still in fourth place, with 11 percent.
Richardson is campaigning in Iowa Friday and will be back again the day after Christmas.
