After Disappointing Seventh-Place Finish, Dodd to Bow Out

Officials with Christopher Dodd said the five-term Connecticut senator would end his bid for the Democratic nomination after finishing a distant seventh place in Thursday’s caucuses.
Dodd campaigned on his years of senate experience, saying he was best positioned to both win in the general election and lead as president.
“This is a huge job, obviously, the presidency of the United States. We’re tired of the country being divided politically. Over that last 26 years, I prided myself on the fact that I’ve been able to bring Democrats and Republicans together on one issue after another that I’ve been involved in,” Dodd told the NewsHour in November. Dodd relocated his family to Iowa, focusing his long-shot campaign almost exclusively on the caucuses.
The senator was expected to announce his decision to drop out on Friday. It was not immediately known whether he would endorse one of the other candidates.
Although the senator garnered less than 1 percent of the vote in Thursday’s caucus, some supporters expressed appreciation of Dodd’s effort.
“Thank you for working so tirelessly for the American cause. Your Iowa campaign was uplifting and inspiring,” one supporter wrote on Dodd’s Iowa blog. “Yours was the best of the best. Hope everyone gets some rest and vitamin C.”
