Even after a late night on David Letterman and months of relentless campaigning, Sen. Hillary Clinton was up early Tuesday, casting her presidential primary vote this morning around 8 a.m. EST at the Douglas Grafflin Elementary School in Chappaqua, N.Y.
Campaign officials said her day would not end there, saying she will spend much of the rest of the day “in the satellite chair,” giving interviews to local TV stations voting on Super Tuesday.
Her daughter, Chelsea, was up even earlier and made a coffee and donut hole delivery to poll workers in Connecticut at 5:45.
Last night Clinton hosted (and paid to have broadcast on the Hallmark channel) a nationwide town hall and then appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman.
On Letterman, Clinton took the chance to talk football (comparing Super Tuesday to the fourth quarter), highlight concerns over the economy and make some jokes, one about her husband President Bill Clinton: “In my White House, we will know who wears the pant suits.”
Clinton wore what David Letterman called a “red state red” suit jacket. “That’s because I’m bringing the country together,” she quipped.
But she was not about to miss the opportunity to make a national appeal for support before Tuesday.
“You want to feel that the person you’re voting for actually cares for you, actually wants to help you,” Clinton said. “But you also want someone you think that can navigate the system and make the changes that we all are hoping for.”
Early Tuesday morning brought some virtual good news to the campaign, with Clinton securing the support of widely-read celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.
“We watched the debates and Clinton just won us over. Barack is great. But Hillary is the better leader, for us,” read the endorsement - posted at 5 a.m. on Feb. 5. “It’s been a great and heated campaign thus far, but we sincerely hope when it comes time for the Democratic convention that the Clinton/Obama dream ticket will be a reality!”
