In the midst of the primary and caucus deluge, Arizona Sen. John McCain and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney got into a heated exchange Tuesday over former Republican presidential candidate and Viagra spokesman Bob Dole.
Dole wrote a letter in defense of McCain to conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh, who has said he would rather see Democrats win the Whitehouse than McCain.
Romney was asked about Dole’s letter Tuesday on the FOX & Friends show.
He went on to say, “I think there’s a lot of folks who tend to think that maybe John McCain’s race is a bit like Bob Dole’s race. That it’s the guy who’s next in line, the inevitable choice.”
The back and forth squabble continued with McCain calling Romney’s attack on Dole “disgraceful,” prompting Romney to say he had nothing to apologize for, though he attempted to phone Dole from his plane in-between campaign stops.
The bickering came after another wedge was driven between the increasingly combative pair early Tuesday in West Virginia.
Romney campaign manager, Beth Myers, issued a statement suggesting McCain had been instrumental in orchestrating a win for Huckabee instead of Romney.
“Unfortunately, this is what Senator McCain’s inside Washington ways look like: he cut a backroom deal with the tax-and-spend candidate he thought could best stop Governor Romney’s campaign of conservative change,” the statement said.
