Arizona Sen. John McCain has won the Republican primaries in New Jersey, Connecticut and Illinois as predicted, according to the Associated Press. New Jersey is the seventh-largest race for the GOP Tuesday, with all 52 delegates going to McCain in the winner-take-all contest.
McCain also won an easy victory for Delaware’s 18 delegates.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney can breathe a sigh of relief after he pulled out a win on his home turf, according to the AP, despite McCain’s attempt to sway some of the state’s voters with an appearance in the Bay State Monday. “People are really drawn to John McCain’s message of national security and economic growth,” state Sen. Bill Baroni, chairman of McCain’s New Jersey campaign, told the New Jersey Star-Ledger. “They see John McCain as a candidate who can both win in November but also be a great president on day one.”
Earlier, Romney said after voting in Belmont, Mass, “It’s touching to have folks remember us fondly and are willing to put aside what differences they have with one or more of my policies, and instead they give their support to the hometown guy.”
