Clinton Campaign Alleges Wrongdoing in Texas Caucuses
Email This
Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign held an “emergency” media conference call at 8:45 pm ET Tuesday to allege that surrogates of Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign were interfering with the caucus process in Texas.

Clinton’s communications director Howard Wolfson, Texas director Ace Smith and chief counsel Lynn Utrecht told reporters that Obama supporters subjugated the caucus process by locking Clinton supporters out of polling places.
“We are here to talk about a tremendously disturbing pattern tonight, we saw it coming all week and hoped the state party would talk some sense into the Obama campaign,” Smith said. But Obama’s chief counsel Bob Bauer asked the second “question” on the call — alleging that the Clinton campaign brings these complaints only when it loses a caucus, a format where Obama has excelled.
Bauer and Wolfson traded charges throughout the call, bickering over past tactics in Iowa, Nevada and other contests.
“I would ask you to join with us this evening in ensuring that the serious problems that are ongoing as we speak in Texas are addressed,” Wolfson challenged Bauer.
“What is happening in Texas is extraordinary. We, of course, don’t hold you personally responsible for it… but we believe that you do share our commitment to strong democratic values,” Wolfson added.
Bauer accused Clinton of a pattern of denigrating caucuses.
“In Nevada, you filed a lawsuit in advance of the caucus, … in Iowa, you threatened various students,” he said.
Aside from the allegations that Obama supporters were stopping Clinton supporters from entering caucus locations near Houston, the campaign also said that Obama supporters filled out caucus forms early in the day and had wrested control of the precinct chairman’s voting materials before the caucuses. It is unclear how those allegations could influence the outcome.

I just returned from my caucus polling place here in Texas, and I can confirm that the Obama supporters stepped outside of their bounds in an attempt to "run the show" and choose delegates before the numbers were counted. Luckily, the gentleman in charge put them in their place real quick. These folks were aggressive and very organized-(cult like is not an understatement), as if they had a plan of attack on how to "take over" the process. It was creepy, especially from a group of college-age people. We were fortunate that there were moderators present that understood the caucus well enough to make sure ours was fair. After seeing this first hand, I have no doubt that these tactics were intentional, and instructed to these kids.
Finally Clinton campaign landed on the hard land and can stand up to pretect their right, though they still don't know how they lost to those street fighters in some other places. "learning by doing." It is not too late to study Mr Obama more carefully: His well designed strategies, his old political tricks, plus his new street fight skills. There are a lot of to learn!
I have watched the media coverage of the democratic primaries today, and I can see the organization of the Obama camp and CNN's cooperation with them. I only hope that PBS cab keep an even hand and report things as they are, not as how Obama would have them.
I voted in the Colorado caucuses last month and saw nothing of the sort - and I live in the middle of a college campus. The kids were wonderful - enthusiastic and inexperienced with the caucus format, but not at all disrespectful of the democratic process.
We are cursed with the Clintons.
I can only speak to my precinct her in central Dallas, but I saw nothing of the sort. While the precinct chair was an Obama supporter, there was no attempt to influence voting. As a matter of fact, he asked for a Clinton supporter to volunteer as secretary, and after she did, had her read out all the material along with him and verify all the numbers when determining delegates. I stood and watched the count along with a number of friends, and everything was on the up and up. I can't speak to what allegedly happened in Dallas, but it would be a shame if anyone was prevented from entering the polling place, though I find it incredible since, this being a caucus, the people are of above average knowledge of their voting rights and would no doubt have called the police to enforce the law. I think the people who post here saying Obama followers are a cult is silly, they are simply enthusiastic about their candidate as you are about yours. I support Obama but don't think he's the best thing since sliced bread. I do believe him to be a competent and intelligent leader with many good ideas however.
I am an Obama campaign volunteer in Maui, Hawaii and worked the entire evening at my precinct caucus location. Although the turn-out was ten times that expected by the party and there were long lines, I was proud of how our democratic process worked that night. We far outnumbered Clinton supporters (Obama earned 79% of the vote in our district), but respect for the process and for one another prevailed.
If we went strictly by popluar vote then we would have no issue's. Everyone would get the same and equal opportunity to vote. I just want to point out that Hilary would be leading in delegates if florida and michigan wouldn't have been stripped of their delegates. The race is far from over. I expect the madness to continue, especially if the convention awards the delegates from michigan and florida.
In Vermont, where the voting was as normal and quiet as it allways is, Obama won in a landslide. Everyone's supporters were enthusiastic, yet respectful. Hmmmmm.
We are cursed with McCain. The petty bickering, mud-slinging, and grubby campaigning between now and the August convention will destroy them both. The big ugly parts start now. What a mess.
A Clinton dynasty?
More Biliary years?
I want to vote Democratic but if she is the candidate, I cannot in all good conscience do so.
Please remember the Clintons' history of extreme unconscionable control tactics.
I really think that the Clinton's are reallly trying to be way to tactful in the Presidentail Campaign because I don't trust the Clinton's because of what former Presdient Clinton done in the White house while he was President and that makes me wonder what his wife will do if she becomes president.
In Sugar Land Caucus in Fort Bend County (one immediately abutting Harris), Obama supporters brought in campaign materials inside the Caucus area and kept on showing to attendees, and said that is what they are supposed to do. As Clinton supporter I was less informed perhaps. I question if what Obama supporters did was the right thing or not. I did not feel comfortable. Though Clinton Supporters outnumbered Obama's in the particular one, I felt that Obama has mastered the technics of Caucusses.
My real question is that our voting is supposed to be a private matter, but the Caucus is an ardant violation of that principle since in the Caucus papers I had to show who is my preferred candidate by name and by party. This is not right as I believe.
Why hasn't anyone shouted
about voters in Ohio being
told to go home and come cback later because they ran out of ballots ????? How many
votes were lost for Obama????
There are two sides to every story - I think that it is a disgrace that Hillary Clinton has to resort to smearing Sen. Obama as her ONLY way to gain votes. We know that what she says doesn't even have to be true - it just has to be said to do the damage. I would like to hold judgment against Sen. Obama until all of the FACTS have been presented.
i observed the existing precinct chairman trying to pick up the packet, which the election judge had given to someone else. i told him just to nominate himself as permanent chair (according to procedure) and he told me that someone was pretending to be a hillary supporter but was really a barack supporter. it was very odd; people were very angry.
Wow, I can't even imagine a campaign intentionally locking voters out of local caucus. How is this possible? How would you be able to tell who is voting for whom and keeping the right people out? Why would the Hillary campaign stoop as low as associating these incidents with Obama? We all know that the Obama campaign would not condone these activities.
It seems to me that the Clinton campaign is once again playing dirty by smearing Obama and the good work he is doing to unify our country for the better. Hillary continues to believe that she along with her wealthy interest groups can run this country. Until citizens of the US realize that running the country is an effort of the people together with politicians, good things like good international relations, universal healthcare, comprehensive immigration reform will not be possible.
The way she is running her campaign is making me more likely to vote for McCain if Obama loses the Democratic nomination.
This caucus stuff is a waste of time and it's only for hardcore supporters. It's too time consuming and redundant. Why don't we just have the primary and be done with it? I voted in the primary early and was done in 5 minutes.
I never went to the Caucus since I knew for sure it was going to take at least an hour to complete. On top of that who's is going to keep an eye on the kids while the parents are waiting to finish the caucus process?
I had a wonderful experience at last night's caucus in Dallas. Although the venue was completely overcrowded, the mood was--at last--hopeful and upbeat. I've not seen people pull together like that since 9/11. Obama gives me the kind of hope for the USA that I've not had since I was a child.
I've been reading many of the comments on the stories on both CNN and NPR today after the latest round of primaries. I really have to say that I'm a little ashamed to be an American based on these comments. Most are extremely judgemental, overly emotional, negative and hateful! Less than 1 out of 100 of the comments even mention political issues and where their or their opponents candidates stand on these issues. I feel it is a sad day for the democratic process and comment on where it has and is heading, that so many are using their right to vote as a statement of their personnel feelings, rather than a considered position on the issues of the United States and its' citizens! I know many people, that I am not in agreement with things they do in their daily lives, however, if they have my same position on a political issue, then I would support them!
I took part in a central Austin caucus last night and was very disappointed in the way things were handled. There was virtually no information about the proper procedures and the turnout was so heavy that people were waiting in line for hours, not even knowing what was happening. Many voters who were waiting just to cast their ballots in the primary were mixed with voters who were waiting to caucus as there was only one line to the same room where both events were taking place. There was almost no leadership or organization and I saw many older voters and voters with young children leave due to the excessive wait and poor planning. I too believe that voting should be a more private affair and especially so after seeing both officials at the table collecting the signatures wearing Hillary buttons right next to their voting official badges. I found this simply offensive. It is obviously the point of a caucus to support ones candidate, but when the people in charge of handling the votes are only supporting one side, be it Hillary or Obama, it certainly makes me question the fairness of the event. Luckily, in our precinct, there were no republicans present (it is Austin) because the democratic caucus, which was supposed to begin at 7:15 sharp had not yet begun at 9:00 when i left after signing in for my candidate. The republican caucus was supposed to begin at exactly 8, but would have begun closer to 11 or 12 judging by the amount of people still in line as I left. I think this "Texas Two Step," as it has been recently dubbed needs quite a bit of work - and I believe this in spite of the fact that my candidate did so well in the caucus.
I would like to point out that many of the people who have commented here that are Obama supporters just assume that Mr. Obama couldn't /wouldn't "stoop" to this kind of activity but just assume that Ms. Clinton would. I'm sidugsted with everyone's mean spititedness simply because someone might or might not be pointing out some weakness in their candidates campaign. I understand that many Obama supporters think that the man walks on water, but please try to remember that he is a politician too and will behave as any other politician does. Do not be fooled ~ ALL politicians will do whatever is necessary to get what they want!
Upfront disclosure: I do support Obama at this time.
It is most disturbing that there seems to be so much posting on-line pro/con both Dem candidates that confusion reigns. So much "info," valid and invalid, true or false, irresponsible commentary, spam, gossip and rumor, more spam, failure to fact-check even basic "news" on either Dem candidate. It is becoming next to impossible to distinguish the more-or-less facts.
Therefore, the very validity of the democratic process is being undermined. The chaos while exercising free speech (1st Amendment rights) is fogging the lenses and dialogue. It is embarrassing to read and just browse the various "blogs," etc. (I absolutely include pro-Obama items.) Much is just venting, or carelessness or not thinking or re-reading -- but much is deliberate spamming. Of course, much is in the name of enthusiasm for one's favored candidate.
The truth is: a lot of garbage goes up every day and clearly some of that garbage is influencing the voters.
I am as much an American patriot as the next guy. However, I am not "really proud to be an American" these days -- in the genuine, positive sense that I am sure Michelle O. must have meant it. I do wonder if this is what's happening in other major democracies of the free world during elections and campaigning? God help us to question the authenticity, the source, the motivation, the acknowledge knowledge, the integrity of the writer/speaker. This also applies to the mainstream media as well. This problem is a slippery slope! Thanks for reading and reflecting on this problem.
Ok. Let's talk about crooked tactics. Someone mentioned Clinton won Florida and Michigan. Am I the only one who remembers that Obama wasn't even on the ballot in MI. Lovely Hillary even laid claim to the winnings in that state when her greatest competition wasn't even an option for voters. But it's not your fault for thinking that. You've been manipulated. But you can still open your eyes to the B.S. Sure, I still muse at the fact that we vote for delegates (not a popular vote) and that we do it on different days, different months even. However, Obama is winning the fight even as wacky as the rules are. She cannot mathematically win but still insists on siding with McCain on experience. Siding with McCain I said! There's more. She was asked what specific experience she has to answer the "red phone" at 3am and provided nothing. The interviewer even reset the question which she danced around again. One more thing. She will do anything to win. Including using fear to manipulate us, much like G.W. Bush did to bring this country to war. I watched her delivery change right before my eyes at the last debate, as she adopted (poorly) Obama's speaking style. Don't see it? Listen to any of her speeches and the way she tells stories about the (little) people she's met along the campaign trail. What about crying? What about rallying applause for saying that it's been an honor to run with Obama, shaking his hand, and then suggesting the ovation moments later was support for her. At the time it sounded incredibly close to a concession speech. Still don't see it? If you can't differentiate between sincerety and someone pulling your heart strings, I fear perhaps this country isn't ready for real change! Some of us seem to be content with the illusion of it!
The reason why Obama does well in caucuses is that only Democrats are present, Here in Ohio, the Republican crossover to vote for Clinton was greater in several counties than the Democratic vote. Hillary took it as a compliment, but even Ohio's Secretary of State Brunner commented to the media that she though Rush Limbaugh's directive to Republicans had influenced many Republicans, who voted for Hillary in the hopes that she would fall to MCCain in November. Apparently they felt it would be a wasted vote if they voted for the shoe-in McCain, and they could do more damage by voting for hillary. Unfortunately, Hillary has taken it as a vote of confidence....
Did you notice that Wolfson and the CLinton campaign called an "emergency" meeting with the MEDIA???? Gee, if I believe I have been wronged, I call "emergency" enforcement personnel or other persons in charge. Let's wait and see if in fact, Obama's campaign personnel are cited for violations, then we will know whether or not this was just another calculated media move by the Clinton camp. so machiavellan!!!!
I caucused near Austin. I have spoken to dozens of friends who also caucused throughout the Austin area. A quick poll confirmed what I experienced. None saw anything other than minor confusion due to the unusually large voting crowds. Most of the officials elected to serve the caucuses were Clinton supporting party entrenched regulars, primarily because they had often been through the process, were familiar with the process, and most important, they volunteered. There was no foul behavior reported and when the Obama majorities were reported there was no doubt that democracy had been fairly served. Finally, at my location, the caucus started a half hour late and the doors were never closed. More than an hour and a half after the polls closed the last caucus voter in line was signed in and the counting began. It is possible that there were isolated bad actors, but I suspect the truth is that all of this is just another scandalous case of Clinton steering the media and exciting her [tragically uninformed] supporters.
We attended the caucus on Mar 4 in Austin, TX. We saw no irregularities from the people organizing the caucus. Instead, we saw Obama and Clinton volunteers working TOGETHER to ensure all went as smoothly as possible. We had one incident where somebody (nobody knows who he was) entered the caucus and claimed that we wouldn't be allowed to vote. He quickly left when the crowd questioned who he was and on what authority he spoke.
Furthermore, the caucus was well attended across ethnic groups, parents with young children, elderly, young and in between. It was GREAT!
When I read comments that Democrats will vote Republican if Senator Clinton is elected, I'm dismayed. It the whole cut off the nose to spite the face syndrome. I question the priorities of these Hillary Haters. Do they care about the critical issues facing the country? Are two continuous wars, an unimaginable debt and corporate welfare just backseat issues? Are the Hillary Haters fear mongering with their threats? The Republican have united behind a controversial candidate and recognize that it gives the party strength in the general election. I would hope that Democrats would recognize this too and unite behind the final nominee of the party.
I have always been a clinton supporter. At the beginning of and well into this contest I would have supported either candidate[not to mention Edwards or just about any other candidate that ran]. However, I have been increasingly dismayed with the Clinton's tactics. Obama has tried to run a positive campaign based on issues and hope for a new direction for this country. Obviously this message was resonating with voters and Hillary was losing the debate decisively. So, the Clintons have resorted to fear, smear, and whatever else it will take to WIN. Now they suggest that MI delegates should be seated despite the fact that Obama wasn't on the ballot. This sums up the fact that that they will do whatever it takes to reclaim the white house. She cannot catch up in delegates but will try to find a way around that fact, thwart the will of the people, and get nominated at the expense of the party and the country. I can't say that come november, if she did not win among the popular vote and elected delegates, that I won't still vote for her despite my misgivings. I can say that it would be very tough to do so and I guarantee that she will have disillusioned so many democrats, not to mention independents and republicans that she will lose. How important is it to her to become the first democratic nominee for president? That is all she'll get. Welcome president McCain!
I was at a site in Texas. Issue #1 the 'Primary Judge' was telling all the voters there during the day that there was NO caucus at that location after she was explicitly told there was.
Issue #2 the well-trained Obama representative at the caucus was telling everyone waiting for the caucus to start that they should probably go home as it was going to start very late. I have seen the manipulation in Texas and the horrific record-keeping in Colorado. All by Obama supporters.
Paul @ 4:32 you are lying...Republican crossover in Ohio was 10% which was EVENLY split between Clinton/Obama...next time you come online to LIE for Obama why don't you check all the Exit polls first!
I watched the Indiana/ N. Carolina primaires tonight, and am still wondering what happened to those missing votes? Seems like a patter is developing here. I predict that within the next few days, we will see a brand new scandal break wide open regarding things like why Clinton was well ahead of Obama in the pre-primary polls, and then Sen. Clinton only just took the primary. I think that Hillary is one smart lady, and that she has given these Obamabots, who have been watching their canididate sink, just enough rope to hang themselves with in this primary in Indiana, maybe N. Car. too? We will see.
As for Florida and Michighan, if Obama truly wanted "change" in politics, he would be calling for all American's votes to be counted. Even if they didn't favor him. Furthermore, if Obama's name wasn't on the Mich. ballots, whose fault is that? I saw the ballot and several other Senators were on it. Should the voters of Michagin be punished because Obama couldn't be bothered to place his name on the ballot? As he did on the Florida ballot?
Again, watch for something to rise to the surface regarding the lost votes in Indiana. I think this will be big.
