Beverly Perdue

Democrat Beverly Perdue has been lieutenant governor of North Carolina for the past eight years and was the first woman to hold the office. She served in the North Carolina House of Representatives and the state Senate for 14 years, and worked as a teacher and hospital administrator before entering politics. Perdue is centering her campaign on the issues of quality public education and health care.

Republican Pat McCrory is the longest serving mayor of Charlotte, N.C., currently in his seventh term. He worked at Duke Energy Corporation before running for city council in 1989. McCrory has been an outspoken proponent of public transportation and supports a sales tax for public transit. His campaign is focusing on the issues of transportation, security and economic development.
