Dennis
Kucinich, Democrat
U.S.
Representative, Ohio |
 |
 |
 | | |
 |
| Three
years after his unsuccessful bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, Rep.
Dennis Kucinich is back, billing himself as the candidate with "no strings
attached." In the 2008 campaign, Kucinich, who was known largely as an antiwar
protest candidate four years ago, may be closer to the mainstream than in 2004. The
five-term congressman from Ohio is the only Democratic candidate who was in Congress
in 2002 and voted against authorizing military action against Iraq. In January
2007, he criticized the troop increase in Baghdad, saying it would mean "more
anger toward the U.S., more support for the insurgency, more instability in Iraq
and in the region, and prolonged civil war at a time when there is a general agreement
in the world community that the solution in Iraq must be political not military."
Kucinich has sponsored a bill to withdraw funding for the war in Iraq and
bring U.S. troops home immediately. On domestic issues, Kucinich has been
a long-term supporter of universal health care, clean energy and tougher environmental
protection. He also has advocated for organized labor and protection of American
jobs, supporting a U.S. withdraw from both the North American Free Trade Agreement
and World Trade Organization. Before being elected to the House, Kucinich
served as an Ohio state senator from 1994 to 1996 and as mayor of Cleveland in
the 1970s. | |

Takes Long-shot Status in Stride |
 |
Dennis Kucinich, arguably the
most liberal Democratic candidate for president, has continued his long-shot mission
to grab the nomination that he mounted in 2004, with past setbacks doing little
to slow his campaign or curb his confidence.
