Presidential Race

McCain, Obama Trade Attacks on Economic Policies

By Alexis Matsui on June 10, 2008

Illinois Sen. Barack Obama revved up his general election campaign Monday with an address on America’s ailing economy, blaming the Bush administration for the country’s financial woes and tying his likely GOP presidential opponent to the current leadership.

Sen. John McCain lashed back at Obama Tuesday with a speech in Washington, D.C., where he faulted his Democratic opponent for devaluing trade agreements, saying he’d raise taxes for middle-income families.

In an interview with NBC Nightly News on Monday, the Arizona senator said while Obama tells audiences McCain is running for President Bush’s third term, “he is running for Jimmy Carter’s second” because of his plan to “spend, tax, spend, tax.”

“He has a proposal that would raise taxes by $1.4 trillion over five years,” McCain said. “Raise spending, excuse me, by $1.4 trillion over five years and no way to pay for his programs. That would put us further in debt.”

In his own address at the North Carolina State Fairgounds, Obama emphasized a greater role for the federal government in assisting those burdened by home foreclosures and unemployment.

“I’ve called for the immediate creation of a $10 billion Foreclosure Prevention Fund to provide direct relief to victims of the housing crisis,” he said. “I’ll provide struggling homeowners relief by offering a tax credit to low and middle-income Americans that would cover 10 percent of their mortgage interest payment every year.”

Obama then took a jab at McCain for his admitted lack of experience in economic matters, which were brought up earlier in the primaries by both McCain’s Democratic and Republican rivals.

“As late as December, John McCain told a newspaper in New Hampshire that he’d love to offer a solution to the housing crisis, but he just didn’t have one,” he said.

McCain, speaking to National Small Business Summit attendees, tried in turn to target Obama’s relative inexperience with the economy.

McCain said Obama’s ideas about eliminating the Social Security earnings cap will “thereby increase the tax to employers.”

“He proposes to eliminate the secret ballot for union voters, and to raise the minimum wage and then index it, which is a sure way to add to your costs and to slow the creation of new jobs,” he said. “You work hard in small business to grow and create new jobs and opportunities for others — and the federal government shouldn’t make you work any harder.”

The Arizona senator also attempted to distance himself from the Bush administration by emphasizing increased government help to homeowners.

McCain will spend the rest of the week at town hall meetings and “finance receptions” in New York, Philadelphia, Hartford, Conn., and Dallas, among other cities, to combine spreading the message of his economic plan with his fundraising efforts.

pisano : To the newscasters of PBS, Please, please, understand this~ I have always voted as an independent! I have carefully chosen my senators and representatives, and have always voted democratic, when it came to my presidential pick~ This time, sadly, after all that the media, the politicians who lost the white house, themselves, time and time again, and the wealthy industries who desire to control the white house and the direction of this country, successfully pushed Hillary Clinton out of the running, you have all left me with no choice but to vote for McCain~ That is right, not Obama, McCain~ My hope, my prayer is, that four years from now, after McCain wins the 2008 election, Hillary will run against him in 2012~ I will not cast my vote for Obama, not because he is a black man, NO, NO NO~ I will not cast my vote for Obama because I do not trust him~ I feel he is nothing more than an arrogant, angry, bitter, manipulative and most importantly, inexperienced politician who will be nothing more than a puppet for the likes of Kennedy, Kerry, Dean, and the rest of the want to be's but desperately failed to be's~ I believe his slips of the tongue, the slips of his wife, tell more about who he is, what he cares about, and what he does not care about it~ This country, the plight of the average American employees, homeowners, parents, all of whom are trying to make ends meet, trying to keep our heads and homes afloat, and Obama, is clueless, and worse than being clueless, he does not care~ So, please, to all of you media people, do not consider me a typical Clinton supporter who is angry, to the contrary, look to your man, Obama, the man presented by all of you, as the next coming of God, Himself, for the anger~! I am not angry, I am terribly disappointed~ Disappointed in how our media chased and hounded HIllary, promoted Obama, and wonder, what is it that all of you will gain, when and if, he wins the election~ There is so much money, so many promises, riding on him~ I am praying, that in the end, you will all get what you deserve, and that is, that Obama loses to McCain, and he loses, badly~ I also am disappointed in how the media, throughout the country, and throughout the primary, failed to publish, or focus on anything considered negative regarding Obama~ It was all swept under the radar, so to speak~ Anything and everything about Hillary or Bill was media frenzy fest~! Disappointment because we do not live in China, where it is expected that the news would be distorted, but America, where we expect our news to be honest and forthright~ I am beginning to see, that is simply not the case~ I am better to go on the internet and search for clues and discussions, on my own~ Why, in the world, did you all put so much emphasis on Obama as he went on his world tour, to become familiar with the world leaders~ A tour hour visit does not make you an expert~ Again, just another public display of the media's infatuation with him~ Stop, please, stop, forcing him down our throats and in our eyes~ Enough, already~ The more you make of him, the more I dislike him~ You are not doing him any favors~ Nor is he helping himself~ Four years from now, Hillary will come back, stronger, and this time, no Obamamania~ Take another look at what you are doing to foster and fester this frenzy, and start to at least give the illusion of being impartial~ You are, as the news vessel, supposed to be impartial, are you not????
