Reporter's Notebook: Judy Woodruff on Barack Obama's Iraq Strategy

By Politics Desk on July 4, 2008

In a conversation with the NewsHour’s Steve Goldbloom on Friday, NewsHour senior correspondent Judy Woodruff discussed likely Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama’s most recent statements on Iraq, the Democratic Party’s strategy to play in all 50 states and the death of Republican Sen. Jesse Helms of North Carolina.

“If they can make subtle changes in their position…and they can do it in a way that is easily understandable to most of the electorate, they can get away with that, no matter how much the other political party comes down on their heads,” Woodruff said.

On Helms, Woodruff said he left his stamp on American politics and emerged as “a firebrand conservative politician, driven largely by his opposition to communism and to what he viewed as just the Liberal takeover of American political thought.”

Beatarice Flannagn : Has Obama ever truthfully and in detail explained his position on Jihad? As in all political battles, all I read is attempts to comment on items of which Obama in his limited experience in Congress has not stated exactly "how" he is going to get Democrats to help those in the country who "cannot help themselves". 3. Gas prices. How does Obama expect to get Congress to allow more oil refineries in the USA while he simultaneously attempts to get auto manufacturers back into the USA in areas as his blighted States of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois? How does he anticipate the Democratic government to get assistance for the poor, if he has no middle class - those being taxed the most - to support the welfare programs that have not worked for decades? Those programs that simply provide subsistance for millions of ILLegal citizens? Will we ever hear, before November, actual and practical plans for Obama's accomplishments to get lower oil prices? Fewer jobs being outsourced to India, Pakistan and other countries. How about the war on drugs? What happened to that war? Has either Obama or Mc Cain addressed the issue of the amount of American Aid that goes to Mexico and why? When Mexico sells its oil to Japan instead of US? Why not use that American Aid to support the Border States that have to close medical facilities and use up domestic welfare funds on ILLegals that leave legal residents without resources? Why are we not hearing any actual practical and sustainable courses of action on these issues? San Diego County Resident

Beatrice Flannagan : As a registed - Independant - Voter, I'm still waiting to hear any practical reasons to vote for either Mc Cain or Obama based upon basic issues facing middle class American. Forget the welfare programs because in California and other border states the bulk of funds go to Immigrants not Citizens. What part of the word IIlegal do our politicitions not understand? Why not discontinue US Aid to Mexico and use those funds to support the medical facilities that have to shut down due to lack of monies? That's due to the treatment provided to ILLegal immigrants. Seems to me that's a no brainer any thinking 8th Grader - even with our faults in education system which is another serious matter - could come up with a way to solve. While Presidential Candidates and espouse all day long, it's Congress that actually runs the Country. The President only has a 30% say in what gets passed. So, why not campaign on eliminating Lobbyists altogether? Now that's an idea. Hummmmmmm.
