Reporter's Notebook: Gwen Ifill on How Campaigns Confront Rumors

By Politics Desk on July 1, 2008

In a conversation with the NewsHour’s Steve Goldbloom on Monday, Senior NewsHour Correspondent Gwen Ifill discussed how campaigns confront Internet rumors and whether patriotism is a legitimate campaign issue.

“Every candidate has to reintroduce themself at some point in the campaign, especially after the nomination has been clinched. But for Barack Obama it’s a bigger deal because people, it turns out, people not only don’t know that much about him but what they think they know is so often not true,” Ifill said.

William DenverCO : My wife and I are daily listeners of PBS and learn of news, or other topics while driving to work. We have other sources of gathering information. It is my opinion that with todays numerous forms of media outlets, we all can get plenty of information if we seek it or care to learn. I always rely on credible sources, like PBS, to separate facts from rumors. If the same facts are talked about in two or more credible sources then I take it as a true fact.

Jlandry : If Gwen Ifill does not step down as moderator in the Vice Presidential debate I will stop any support of PBS and will ask the 600 people I know to ask the 600 people they know. In the effort of fairness, this woman should have never accepted the position of moderator. Shame on her for her greed at the Voters expence.

viviane campbell : This moderator has to step down, it is absolutly imperative that this debate be seen as totaly unbiased. The fact that she has a financial motive in seeing the Obama/ Biden ticket be victorious makes a travesty of this debate. People will see bias even if none is apparent and PBS will carry the blame. I will no longuer support PBS if this travesty is allowed to continue and this is a promise I intend to keep.

viviane campbell : Ifill must recuse herself in view of her financial gain if Obama/Biden ticket is victorious. People must be assured that this debate will be fair and above board and nothing else.

Shamika : REALLY Ms Ifill? This seems to you that being 'Moderator' to this Debate is NOT a conflict of MONEY/Interest to you Gwen? Wow. this has all been very shocking and disappointing for me. You are a role model for the next generation of women. Why would YOU act like one of the GREEDY & manipulitive fat cats - self interest & ABUSER of your position? Disappointed in WA.

phoebe7 : In response to Jlandry:I've been a fan of Gwen Ifill for years and trust her more than most anyone else to moderate this debate! In fact I was surprised to hear that people thought she might possibly be partial to the Obama campaign! I really could not tell by her show, Wash. Week in Review how she stood.

Patriotin7 : Gwen Ifill has lost all of my respect. It is wrong to host a debate when one has a vested financial interest in the outcome (like a book deal). PBS must not let this happen. I will stop all contributions to what used to be a respected organization. Former Journalist and former Member of Congress.
