Convention Decision Highlights GOP's Post-Katrina Sensitivity

By Ray Suarz, Richard Norton Smith, Peniel Joseph, Mark Shields. Produced by Meghann Farnsworth on August 31, 2008
TAGS:

As Hurricane Gustav approached the Gulf Coast, the Republicans decided to radically scale-back the first day of the convention in Minnesota, saying they wanted to focus on helping those facing the storm’s wrath rather than partisan politics.

With the news fresh off the wire, senior NewsHour correspondent Ray Suarez sat down with historians Richard Norton Smith and Peniel Joseph as well as syndicated columnist Mark Shields to discuss the situation and its potentially political implications.

“By cancelling most of tomorrow’s program, this party sends a pretty powerful signal that in effect we have learned our lesson from three years ago … This is, ironically enough, the re-launch of compassionate conservatism,” Richard Norton Smith said.

Steve in New York : As expected, McCain and his campaign stratetist Steve Schmidt have taken advantage of the situation on the Gulf Coast with Hurricane Gustav about to hit landfall there tomorrow morning by canceling most of day 1 of the DNC's activities, thus keeping McCain and his nemesis, George W. Bush, separated at berth -- the berth "reserved" for Bush at the RNC -- and thus literally keeping him out of the picture there. (That would be the picture of Bush standing next to McCain.) This decision will leave the convention free and clear to serve as a platform for McCain and his fellow G.O.P. hypocrites to flaunt their horse-and-pony show of "compassionate conservatism" and shed their crocodile tears over the tragic situation in the Gulf (if the damage there is as bad as some forecasters are saying). Listening to the radio this morning, I heard one G.O.P. spokesman remark that the Republicans' display of compassion on this occasion would "make the RNC look like American Idol's 'America Gives Back' show" (it's actually called "Idol Gives Back"); don't examine that comparison TOO closely, or you'll realize that American Idol's producers made $5 million from that, without contributing a penny of their own money -- it was all donated by viewers who called toll-free lines to pledge money.
