Reporter's Notebook: Gwen Ifill Previews Obama's Acceptance Speech

By Gwen Ifill on August 28, 2008

Senior correspondent Gwen previews the importance of Obama’s acceptance speech on Thursday, which he will deliver on the anniversary of the 45th anniversary of the march on Washington when Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered the historic “I have a dream” speech.

“Tonight what he wants to do is obviously give an inspiring speech, but he also wants to be nuts and bolts,” Ifill said. “He wants to show people what it will look like when he’s president.”

Ifill also recaps the surprising roll call vote that officially nominated Sen. Barack Obama as the Democratic nominee and the enthusiastic expressions of support from Sen. Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton.

“It was interesting seeing that at a critical moment, it was important for them [Bill and Hillary Clinton] to step down and say, this is his moment, this is his stage and we really want to win in November,” Ifill said.

Eric and Stephanie Stradford : "but he also wants to be nuts and bolts, Ifill said. Gwen: You might recall our grassroots efforts to "heal" the Meadows of Manor Farms community in Landover. If you would reply with an email address, we'll share a Power Point timeline endowed by the late Dr. Arthur A. Fletcher (R), Father of the Affirmative Action Enforcement Movement. Dr. Bernard Anderson (Wharton), former Secretary Alexis Herman, and former Colorado Supreme Court Justice Greg Scott could speak to this timeline and the Arthur Fletcher Affirmative Action Enforcement legacy. An African American candidate must connect vision with law of the land to promote equal opportunity.

Grace : Gwen Ifill should absolutely remove herself as moderator of the upcoming VP Debate. She is clearly biased and clearly will profit financially. This is wrong in every regard. This is just further evidence of the politics of the media and absolute disdain for any appearance of neutrality. Shameful

mary : It is not a MODERATOR when someone has stated they have a vested interest in someone getting elected. YOU NEED TO EXCUSE YOURSELF AND stop stating YOU DON'T know what the uproar is about. What a shabby defensive statement from a supposed smart woman. Sorry....what smells bad probably is bad... EXCUSE YOURSELF.

louise dickerson : Gwen Ifill shouldn't be allowed to moderate the vice-presidential debate tomorrow night. It would be the same as having a moderator with a gender-based book about Palin running for office about to publish. But then, the media is the sme media that scuttled the "bailout" plan in Congress by headlining it "Wall Street Bailout" which misled voters completely. Charlie Rose asked this question on September 28 or 29, asking a New York Times reporter how the phrase "Wall Street Bailout" occurred, and it was suggested that it may have caused the House vote. No one answered his question.

Len Lemmer : Gwen Ifill's participation in the Vice Presidential Debate is a total conflict of interest. She should not be moderating a debate, in an election in which she has a material interest. This is unbelievable! More media bias. Where can an American go to get unfiltered news without the bias? Today's media is no more truthful than the lies that were published during the Revolutionary War or the Civil War. Credibility? Forget it!

L Nelson : Anyone who watches PBS has witnesses your liberal bais..Lerer do not even mention your conflict to be moderator at the Newshour.. shame on him..Don't you feel it would be bad for your career to go ahead with the debate..You would be well advised to tell the viewing public up front of your conflict.. This is a MONEY conflict & it looks very bad...

Betse Lanier : Gwen Ifill's decision to moderate tonight's Vice Presidential debate is reprehensible! She shows incredible arrogance and hubris, no moral integrity and no professional responsibility. She's just another low life who considers herself a reporter! Betse Lanier

JohnD : The media shows itself again to be untrustworthy. Ms. Ifell should excuse herself immediately. She has a vested interest in the success and election of Mr. Obama which is directly related to the book to be published. It matters not whether one page or paragraph has been written. There should be no question whatsoever. You have lost my respect as an unbiased moderator.

Shamika : Gwen Ifill's blog (Newshour Vote 2008 Reporter's Notebook) is filled with recommended 'gotcha' questions to slap Gov. Palin with. That should be an indicator of Gwen's Ifill's bias if the facts about her financial (investment on the line) deals were not enough. Even though it is pointed out that other moderators write books do they write them about ONE of the candidates they are moderating a debate for? What possible difference could it make that she has not written that chapter yet? This 'wait and let the people decide' IF she was fair after the debate is absurd! Gwen's bias can win or lose the election in favor of her CHOSEN candidate. No one will be talking about that afterwards and she knows it. And even if they are it would not matter. Oh... but then it won't matter if she does lose her reporting/moderating position, since her sights will probably be fixed on the new position as Obama's Press Secretary. Her determination to keep the post as MODERATOR is exposed as being more than just about money for her book isn't it? How niave can we all be?? No pudding for me please. She knows the power that she has now that she had manipulated herself into position of moderating this debate (via NOT disclosing that she has this book deal about her chosen candidate). Her tone and attitude toward Gov. Palin was clear from Ifill as she 'moderated' the news for PBS at the Convention. Please step up and do the ETHICAL thing. Be above even the APPEARANCE of evil. Remove Gwen as the MODERATOR. concerned in WA

Shamika : How can we be assured that Ms Ifill has not given her VP Debate questions to her friends in the Obama camp? If she is unscrupulous enough to stand this MODERATOR post without having disclosed her investment and admiration of Obama (title of her book) beforehand why do we think she is above the table regarding this? Certainly this question has been addressed and can be confirmed by those who are in control of Ms Ifill being in this most important position in the electing of our next president. WAKE UP!!!

Robert Adair : I wanted to take a moment to congratulate Ms. Gwen Ifill on a job well done on moderating the debate. I was very glad to see that all the allegations from some were completely unfounded. You did an outstanding job.

Barbara of Montana : Ms. Ifill's work on the veep debate was excellent, and put to rest any talk of bias. She made the whole event into a warm, yet fast-moving event that tried to herd the cats toward showing their best as they bid to be the vice presidential winner. Her question choices were just right, and kept me in awe of her professionalism and her deep connection to the viewer. We in Montana say "wow."

judy : I TOTALLY AGREE WITH BARBARA OF MONTANA. MS.IFILL WAS UNBIASED AND PLEASANTLY COMPETENT. THOSE WHO DISAGREE MUST BE HOOKED ON THE BIASED AND PERSONAL ATTITUDES THAT ARE USUALLY PRESENT IN A MODERATOR OF POLITICAL DEBATES.

SOL LEVINE : I LOVE & WATCH YOU PROGRAM EACH WEEK. RE: PRESIDENTIAL & VICE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATES I FEEL THAT JIM LEHRER AND YOU BLEW IT. MANY OF BOTH YOUR QUESTIONS WENT UNANSWERED AND YOU DID NOT STOP THE DIATRIBE AND ASK FOR AN ANSWER. WHY DIDN'T YOU NIP IT IN THE BUD? KATIE COURIC DID. I HOPE SHE IS THE MODERATOR OF THE NEXT DEBATE. THE COUNTRY COULD USE SOME STRAIGHT TALK. DO YOU KNOW WHO THE NEXT MODERATOR WILL BE? THANKS & GOOD LUCK

DM Gerson : Dear Ms. Ifill: Your position stated on Meet the Press yesterday that it was not your responsobility to challenge Sara Palin to answer your questions suggests that we do not need a professional reporter/analyst such as yourself to moderate these debates. Any 10th grader capable of reading a question out loud will do. Shame on you!
