Reporter's Notebook: Judy Woodruff Previews DNC Remarks by Michelle Obama

By Politics Desk on August 25, 2008

Senior correspondent Judy Woodruff looks at Michelle Obama’s role in her husband’s campaign and previews her opening remarks at the Democratic National Convention Monday night.

“Her challenge tonight is to come across as someone the American people can be comfortable with as first lady and everything that represents and, by the way, that is a very tough job,” said Woodruff.

“I’m sure that Obama himself will say something about McCain but I would say the toughest language is going to come from others,” she added.

Woodruff also commented on Sen. Ted Kennedy’s likely appearance at the convention, saying “for Ted Kennedy, who has been diagnosed with a very serious illness… the fact that he’s here, when he’s under going chemotherapy, I think that will be a very emotional moment.”

AustinVoter : I'm both relieved and grateful to know Judy Woodruff and the NewsHour team will cover this convention tonight, three hours worth! We'll be watching. And, yes, Michelle Obama must be a brave woman to head into this maelstrom...

Dona : I will be following the news of this convention with great interest. I am an admirer of Mr.Kennedy and think he is very courageous in his fight against his illness. I think it is wonderful that he will be in attendance at this most important convention.

Dr Mark Miksic : Over several months I've witnessed Judy Woodruff's many negative comments about Sen Obama, repeating Republican attacks as fact. Tonight in haste she actually misquoted Michelle Obama, saying that ..She said she was never proud of America... Too much this time.

emer : How DARE Judy Woodruff just state that "Michele Obama said that she was never proud to be an American!! For years I have relied on this show to present factural news without negative slants. Correct this immediately!! Or does this reflect the true feelings of the NewHour?

Ron Cowin : Michelle Obama has two goals. She has to introduce herself to America and start the introduction of Barack. I have never heard her make a speech, but have heard her on programs such as The View. I think that she will receive a warm reception and she will give an excellent speech.

mariah : The commentators and reporters did "not get it." The audience did; in the convention and at home. Michelle Obama's speech was 'one from the heart,' not from speech-writers. A remarkable speech about an America we want to recapture.

Donna Sayoc : I watched the DNC on your show tonight. I agree with the gentleman who is an historian, that Michelle Obama's speech was exactly what we needed to know, personally, about the man who will hopefully lead our country as the next President of the United States. She is a dedicated wife, mother and an admired role model for many. It was a good speech and she gave the convention and viewers an opportunity to view her as an excellent speaker who is ready to serve the country as First Lady. Also how wonderful to see Ted Kennedy. It was a great first night. Thanks for the coverage.

Mary : While the Kennedy's were wonderful, Michelle Obama clearly stole the show - she was phenomenal, an observation somehow missed by commentators Shields and especially Brooks. I believe that speech will be a turning point for millions of undecided voters.

Laura Laughton : Michelle Obama was great. What a bright, talented, compassionate thinker she is. I can't see what the disconnect is between her and some in the public. Perhaps, some in society have become deaf to true altruism.

Ellen : Judy, Your reporting is as always excellent. Regarding Michelle Obama's speech: her comments were 'real' (as one could easily observe when she went into 'must say phase'. Although less enthusiased with her husband, she turned me to a supporter simply becasue of her inherent strength. thank you Ellen
