Reporter's Notebook: Ifill on a Convention on Two Tracks

By Steve Goldbloom on September 2, 2008

Sen. John McCain looks to get his campaign back on track Tuesday when the convention gets underway in primetime. Senior correspondent Gwen Ifill discusses how Hurricane Gustav has affected the GOP efforts in St. Paul and discusses the media maelstrom surrounding McCain’s news running mate, Sarah Palin.

“They (McCain camp) were correct when they said she was someone that did not have baggage in Washington. What they neglected to assure everyone is that she didn’t have baggage somewhere else. And right now there are a lot of reporters in Alaska, a lot of reporters asking questions here in St. Paul, a lot of Republicans asking questions here in St. Paul about, ‘who is Sarah Palin, is there more that we don’t know?”

aimee : To Gwen: fyi I am a Simmons Grad! I suggest you talk to Gov Palin about how she expects to care for a disabled child, a pregnant daughter and several other children while keeping on point with all the many issues that will affect the USA over the next four years. I raised a handicapped child and found it to be a full time job. For a Values mom,she seems to have dropped the ball where her daughter is concerned. Maybe she is already in over her head. I bet she has never heard of half the places about which she will be required to be knowlegeable. You might ask her how she would have reacted if someone had told her a person with similar family responsibilities would be nominated for the job.

Ellen Dunsker : I just heard Gwen Ifel interview the two women senators about Sarah Palin. One senator was upset that Gwen would ask about caring for her family while a VP and that question was not asked of Kennedy, McCain or Obama. Each of those men had "stay-at-home" wives to be there when they could not (even if the home was the White House!). Gwen should have brought that up. I'm all for mothers working outside the home but there is a big difference when there is a "stay-at-home" mom when the candidate will be very busy as Pres or VP.

Sandy : I feel sorry for Sarah Palin's daughter. I, too, had a baby at 17, and believe me when I say, it was and has been no picnic -- for my son or me. A 17 year-old girl is but a child herself and not emotionally able to handle the responsibility of being mother and wife -- no matter how mature SHE and HER PARENTS think she is. Mrs. Palin's daughter needs her mother's support at home -- not in the White House. I was an undecided voter but leaning toward John McCain. Now, because of his poor judgment and blatant disrespect for Mrs. Palin and her family, I am definitely voting for Obama this November. There was no excuse -- John McCain had many great VP choices and should not have enticed Mrs. Palin away from her five children, that include a new born and young elementary school aged girl. This is a time in their lives when they need their mother more than ever. I question Mrs. Palin's character. I applaud her for her strength and desire to make positive changes for all of us as a successful politician; but on the other hand, what I don't understand is -- if she wants a career as a politician, why does she keep having babies? In all fairnes to her children, I feel she has her priorities backwards. As governor of Alaska, I'm sure Mrs. Palin feels the stress, but juggling family and job is probably doable. But assuming VP of the US? Come on now, Sarah. Get it right. I wish Sarah's daughter the best and I will pray for her and her baby.

Cliff in NH : I just heard Ifill's report on Palin, and I was very disappointed. It dwelled on the story of the daughter's pregnancy and Sarah's ability to juggle everything, which everyone except the press believe are non-issues. But she barely touched on the real issues -- Palin's affiliation with the radical Alaska Independence movement, her pork-seeking including support of the bridge to nowhere, her radical religious views as a creationist and dominionist, the trooper investigation, her anti-environmental views. Why don't you focus on the things that matter?

Kimberly : Gwen, I've just listened to your conversation with the 2 Republican congresswomen about the choice of Governor Palin for the vice-presidential slot. I'm a staunchly liberal supporter of Senator Obama, but I want to congratulate the congresswoman from New Mexico for calling you on the double-standard question. She is right - would anyone ask Sen Obama how he was going to manage a family and the work in the White House? Why is it fair to ask women but not men about the balance of family and career? You are one of my favorites, Gwen, but it is up to the media, and women in the media in particular, to put an end to the double standards! Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Rachel : Hi. I have to say that I'm a little disappointed in your coverage of Gov Palin. And for the record, I should probably note that I'm a democrat. I really want the info about the substantive issues -- is she totally opposed to lobbyists and earmarks? Or did she hire a lobbyist to help her get earmarks? Did she manage her executive responsibilities appropriately? Or did she abuse her power to get someone fired because of her sister's divorce? I really DON'T care about her daughter's pregnancy or Ms Palin's potentially difficult child care issues. Women deal with difficult child care and parenting issues all the time, and it is not relevant to this discussion. It's just part of having to learn to do everything that men do, but backwards and in high heels. What IS relevant is Ms Palin's policies and the degree to which she has walked her talk. Please don't take the easy route to a story -- there's plenty to fill the time with. Thank you.

Good God -- a great candidate comes along, and the Media wants to attack and kill -- I am shocked at your prejudice against her, and I have watched your show a long time. Get it straight, guys. Report BOTH sides. Let's not just beat the same negative stuff over and over. It's sickening, and not professional at all. Very disappointed in your reporting of Sara Palin. They will WIN, in spite of the Biased, negative, Liberal Media. I am angry with your reporting. Hope you can tell!!!!! Let's hear the Positive Side. When you compare her with Obama, she's gold, he's dust. Our country will go down the tubes if Obama elected. Sara Palin has sound moral values -- can we see you report that???????? Martina : Gwen Ifill, as an African American woman I used to be one of your biggest fans. However, in the last few months, your OBVIOUS Obama bias has been a real turn-off. I am particularly irritated with the PBS News commercial where you tell the viewer, "We don't tell you....but what you need to know." That is ludicrous. It has been glaringly apparent that you are as biased as the MSM. I want to thank you for asking Congresswomen Heather Wilson and Mary Fallin those very sexist, senseless questions about Gov. Palin. The more you and your colleagues continue down this course, the more you will demonstrate how frustrated THE PRESS is with McCain's choice. You guys sound infantile and ridiculous and are swaying no one. As a life-long Democrat, I have been so anger over the bias YOU routinely displayed against Sen. Clinton. You hounded her out of the race, in favor of an inexperienced, unaccomplished with NO EXECUTIVE experience. Watching the broadcast tonight, I am reminded how impartial and unprofessional our press has become. I am reminded why I will not be voting for Obama but John McCain--even though I disagree with many of Palin's views. The press SHOULD NOT be selecting our candidates.

Julie Stroeve : Gwen, Jim, Ray and All, re: coverage of RNC convention You MUST report on the utter hypocricy between the Family Values party and the Palin pregnancy out of wedlock story. This is absolutely beyond the pale -- the interview of delegates is a 2000 and 2004 repeat of "I'm holding my nose and voting for anything that comes across on a ballot" because our party needs to maintain power and maintain its Washington stronghold. The Republicans have NOTHING to do with integrity or policy positions or governance. They are all about ignoring truths and making the story up as they go along. This just makes me ill. The story that rolled out about Shrub and Cheney staying home for the hurricane is B.S. and I'm waiting for the MSM to call them on it. David Brooks better come clean pretty soon, too. I respect him, but what's going on in Saint Paul versus the Republican platform is apart by a glacier's width! get with it!!!!!

eswcpa : To Gwen Ifill; I was disappointed that YOU would spend time with 2 Republican Congresswoman asking about how Sarah Palin would perform/balance her duties as a mother and professional political office holder. The Congresswoman were right and you were wrong. On the other-hand, you could have acted as a professional journalist and asked about her performance in the offices that Sarah Palin has held and the policies she supports. For example, her use of executive authority, her claim as a reformer but still actively trying to get millions of dollars in 'ear marks', her claim to be opposed to the 'bridge..', but actually supporting it when she was in the local town and running for governor. Those kind of things would have been informative and professional

Gwen and every other drive-by-media person on the news hour I hope runs into more TRUE CONSERVATIVES. Frankly I have noted more of that bias in the reporting by members of the staff such as your reporting Gwen. You are not alone in this but Mr. Lehrer has lost control of the balance. For you to be openly biased and focusing your reporting on the nonsensical, sensationalism around Palin's daughter and her personal business is appalling to me and others who look to the News Hour for something more.

Jeffery DeMarco : As a reporter, I find it strange that nothing related to Governor Palin's education is queried. I understand the Republican's 'If you take out our number 2, we'll take out your number 1', on the experience question but is there nothing to contrast and examine between a person, male, female, black or white; A graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School and president of the Harvard Law Review and a High School Graduate? Is it not 'pc' to talk about basic educational experience because of the 'classes' talked about by pundits who segment the electorate into 'non-college-lower-income-whites' etc. etc. Would it offend that segment and so it is not even brought up ?

T Heller : What is a "Simmons grad"? And of what relevance is it, other than to provide a sounding board for illogical and biased remarks? --------- now, to what I came here to write: I am thoroughly dismayed by PBS' fist half-hour of coverage of the Republican National Convention tonight. The hosts and correspondents have been distracted by the Sarah Palin's daughter story. Gee, a young woman is pregnant -- STOP THE PRESSES!! READ ALL ABOUT IT!! Water runs downhill, too, if you've never noticed. And rest assured that the sun still rises in the east. I am particularly critical of Ms. Ifill who has seemed to relish poking Republican spokespersons with this "what did John McCain know and when did he know it?" stick. But can't that same standard be applied to the press, like Ms. Ifill? What did *she* know about John Edwards' affair while he was running for president? And did she think it reflected poorly on his judgment and that of his party and supporters? Or did she think it was a private matter and decline to report or comment upon it? I would also single out David Brooks who foolishly took up the subject, perhaps out of some perceived need to counter the wilfull and glib comments from Mark Shields. David should have simply declined to comment. That would have revealed Mr. Shields as the hack that he too often serves as. If you're going to report on the convention, please report on the convention.

CJ, VA Beach : i am an Independent, I find it extremely unfortunate that i see such biased reporting and questioning going on on PBS and the media in general. This is especially so after the free ride love in they gave the Democrats last week. I think it's sad that 90% of the "Journalists" have sold out and or forgot Journalism 101. No one wants to discuss all of the facts, apparently they only want to report the half so it makes it a juicy story. EG not reporting for 2 days that the Trooper in question TAZERED A 10 YEAR OLD BOY and threatened to kill Gov Palin's father, and drank & drove a State Police Car. I found that 2 minutes after she was announced - just by going to the Anchorage newspaper! You guys are biased or incompetent or both. Chris W : When candidates campaign for office they openly embrace exposure of their smiling spouses and children to garner many votes from those who feel the personal lives of the candidate is important and an indicator of how they will perform in office. Over the weekend news surfaced which is less than flattering to Gov. Palin. Now suddenly the GOP is screaming for privacy for her immediate family. Her family matters are a private matter which have no bearing on the type of VP she would make. Ladies and gentlemen of the Republican the Democratic parties, you cannot have it both ways. If you are going to tout these candidates for their family values and Norman Rockwell qualities then you have to realize it is a double edge sword. So sit down and shut up about the media invading your privacy, because you invited them in your front doors for cake and coffee.

drlinda : To Gwen: Please ask Gov Palin: If your 17yo daughter has life-threatening complications that require an abortion, would you chose it? Why should there be no abortion even to save the life of the mother? Why should your religious beliefs become the law of the land? Can you consider yourself "pro-life" if the life of the woman does not count? Would Gov Palin have chosen death rather than have an abortion, leaving her other 4 children without a mother? Does Gov Palin have the right to make this decision for every other pregnant woman in America? If stem cell research could find a cure for Down's Syndrome, would Gov Palin vote for it?

Tex : Thank you News Hour for giving the public the ability to hear the speakers at the convention tonight and for broadcasting speeches in their entirety with little interruptions. I was shocked to see that Big Brother along with countless other reality TV shows being aired on what could be the most important election in my lifetime. It is a sad day when media outlets will not even give the public a platform to make an educated decision. When other networks finally decided to interrupt regular programming, they continued to insult the public by having commentators from the media elaborate on the actual event instead of giving the public an opportunity to watch and hear the event for themselves. It sickens me and leads me to believe that PBS is the only true and unbiased television news broadcast that the public can count on. Obviously, the other major networks are controlled by their foreign owners whose ideals are based in a socialized government system. I never thought I would see USA allow the media to be so biased. Bill W. : Concerning Gwen's mini-panelist Christie Todd Whiteman: Guess it's true, what they say, that "Time wounds all heels." Sorry--I was channeling Rev. Wm. Spooner. Meantersay "heals all wounds". Or perhaps it's "The media have the attention span of a gnat." Here's the former Secretary of Poisoned Water and Toxic Air (I noticed that Laura Bush didn't mention her in her litany of "powerful women" serving with "the man I love") who either capitulated to pressure from the "It's My Party, Too" Whitehouse, or lied on her own, to declare the air at Ground Zero "free from contaminants, perfectly fine to breathe," etc. Not that I'm a "first responder," but I do take note (even with a 66-year-old brain, I still notice a thing or two) that a very large number of the firemen and others who spent weeks without respirators digging for their buddies' body-bits have severe respiratory ailments directly attributable to going about in a toxic environment "certified safe" by Dear Christie. At the very least, I'd have asked her about why she was at the GOP convention when she was forced to lie/willingly lied about something so important. And, despite her book (It's my party, and I'll cry if I want to, or whatever), howsabout the details of her being forced from office? Or don't such questions "fit the context" of a rah-rah-rah, wrap-us-in-the-flag moment? Would such questions be "rude" to ask? What's the point of having PBS around if it can't pound some of these nails on the head? And where's the commentary on the sickening celebration of the Navy SEAL death (Now, why was it exactly that Pat Tillman's forehead had three 5.56mm bullet holes in a 2-inch cluster--fired from maybe 10 yards away? More military heroism? Was he trying to save Pvt. Jessica Lynch and forgot he was in Afghanistan, not Iraq?) and the celebration of POWs' "heroism"? Cf. Ambrose Bierce, "The Devil's Dictionary", on the topic of whether the flag is the last or the first refuge of the scoundrel. Have to confess that I'm reading Andrew Bacevich's The New American Militarism while listening to the tube. Try it. You might get some perspective. Andy's real good at noting that BOTH parties are complicit in this jingoistic militarism ruining this nation, our Constitution, and a good part of the world beyond our borders. His next (and most recent) book is "The limits of power--the end of american exceptionalism"--And "Daydream Believers" is also pretty good--though the author, Slate's Fred Kaplan, made a poor choice in titles-- he took his from Lawrence of Arabia and not from the Monkees-- but I kept asking "OK, so who's the homecoming queen?" every time I glanced at the running header. I spent my time in Vietnam "defending our country" -- "Country First; Constitution Last," the new GOP slogan, right? So I'm not without sympathy for soldiers (roger that). I've been there, done that. But my unit was good at pilfering stuff, cleverly setting up a cold beer franchise out of its very own little legacy ammo dump. Wasn't there a Sergeant York, in WWII, who single-rifled-ly captured a company or squad of German troops? That's something to get a medal for. Getting captured by the enemy? Sometimes unavoidable. Often very stupid. Worthy of a medal? I don't think so. (Hmm. I wonder if McCain is getting Veteran's Disability payments. Anyone think to ask?) Escaping from a POW camp? That's priceless. Escaping and leading dozens of your fellow prisoners to freedom? Even better. Medal-icious. (PS--to Robert, above: having anyone, Republicrat OR Demican, merely "express their opinions" is pretty much at the root of what's wrong w/ America. Also, if you can recite the Preamble to the US Constitution, by heart, and carry around a pocket copy of the Constitution, then I'd have more empathy w/ your position(s). And if you're one of those "rite to lifers," I suggest you read the 9th Amendment to the Constitution (other rights retained by the people). If you think the government, fed. or state or city, has any authority to fiddle around with what a woman can do with her body, then let me suggest the 100% solution for abortion prevention: forced vasectomies of all males on their 10th birthday (or at bris). That would probably eliminate almost all "unexpected" or "unplanned" or "unwanted" pregnancies, no? Tillman cite: http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-07-26-tillman-friendly-fire_N.htm

Mark : For tonight's coverage, I give PBS a D-. Professional reporters need to spend less time comparing current/previous elections, spend more time ACCURATELY REPORTING the news, and let the public decide who is telling the truth. Gov. Palin's teenage daughter's pregnancy is news that could be reported in less than 5 minutes. In my opinion, political pundits spending over 30 minutes asking other pundits and guests about the teenager's pregnancy is media bullying of a teenager. Since PBSs reporting left more unanswered questions than answered questions, I thought I would give you a list of questions to ask. Tomorrow, instead of PBS reporting sound bites about Gov Palins Brother-in-laws firing that make the public questions Gov. Palins integrity, PBS need to contact both sides and find out what is being alleged. Until PBS has accurate information, they need to refrain from slanderous remarks. The following are some of the issues that I believe are relevant and have not been thoroughly covered. What ear-marks did all the candidates request for their states and what were the amounts? What rights should a mother of an unborn child have? What steps will the candidates take to reduce abortions/teen pregnancies? Sen. Obama plans to increase corporate taxes, which will reduce corporate earning and dividends. In-turn, I would expect stock prices to go down. What impact will this have on Americans who have been putting money in 401(k). Some companies like Enron prevented their employees from moving their money. Will Sen. Obamas tax policy cause some US and Overseas investors to sell their stock and cause companies to fail? In-turn will some employees lose all their retirement savings. Sen. Obama states he will create new laws that will remove tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas. How much additional accounting overhead is this going to create to determine which companies get/don't get the tax breaks? What about companies that stop order product US companies and start ordering from foreign supplier? Ultimately US jobs are lost. For many years (Including the Clinton Presidency), H1B visa have been supported by both parties to outsource good paying Information Technology jobs. Since Sen. Obama supports this type of visa to export good jobs, why should we trust him to keep new high paying green jobs in the US? What type of good paying jobs will the candidates create for for high school graduates and drop outs that have trouble with reading, writing, math, and/or science. These high paying green jobs will be out of their reach. How are protectionist programs that Sen. Obama is proposing, going to affect the NAFTA treaty that was signed by President Clinton? Will Sen. Obamas plan cause Canada and Mexico put the old tariffs back in place? How will Sen. Obamas protectionist programs affect US inflation? If we stop importing cheep good/labor from foreign countries, will there be shortages or will the costs of these goods significantly increase? In the late 1970s, the government imposed price caps on gas and there were gas shortages. How will Sen. Obamas economic program affect seniors? As a general rule financial advisors recommend seniors put their savings in safe investments that usually have low returns. Given the high inflation rate of gas/food and deflation of the seniors home, it seems like seniors are being hit the hardest. How will the candidates reduce global poverty, global diseases, and protect the environment? What guidelines will the next President use to determine whether we should intervene diplomatically and/or militarily to prevent genocide?

batb (been around the block) : Where was Gwen last night, the night of John McCain's speech at the RNC? I've been extremely disappointed in Ms. Ifel's coverage of the RNC, seeing as her obvious lib-left bias has been so much in evidence. I don't mind that Gwen has her own opinions but, surely, she's paid to keep them in check when she's on-camera. I'm calling it the Gwen Grimace. Whenever she passed off to Jim Lehrer from the convention floor, after having slammed the GOP, the look on her face said it all: What can you DO with these neanderthals? Up to now, I've always found Gwen Ifel to be one of the best informed, prepared, and objective interviewers and political commentators in the MSM. It's unfortunate that she's allowed her own views to be so glaringly on display, as her credibility has been seriously tarnished.

Kate : I've just read that the McCain campaign has arranged the VP debate to be structured around short answers to compensate for Palin's inexperience as a debater. Wow! Instead of dumbing down the debate standards - and this is for the possible presidency - shouldn't we, instead, be raising the bar on Biden? If Palin doesn't have the chops to debate why is she a candidate at all?

Papucho : Gwen Ifel's pro-Obama bias is the reason why I no longer watch PBS's Newshour. I was very disappointed to find out she will "moderate" the VP Debate on Thursday. How is it possible that so few have learned the lesson that a free press is the last bastion of democracy, and being free means UNBIASED and truthful reporting.

comingbackto : I would like to know if Palin has spoken to McCain, about the war? If not, why not? If she has, what does McCain mean when he says we will leave victorious? Is he going to bomb the Iraqi people into saying uncle, or what?

beehive4 : Bad job tonight Gwen!!! I was hoping to see a true journalist moderating with impartiality and fairness. You didn't come through. I hope everyone else can see through to your preferential treatment of Biden starting from the first question of the debate! How utterly incompetent that the Council for Presidential Debates allowed this travesty by hiring you. I guess you really were just thinking about your own future profits of your Obama book.
