Vote 2008: Presidential Election Coverage

Reporter's Notebook: Judy Woodruff Discusses Moderating Forum on Service with McCain, Obama

By on September 13, 2008

NewsHour senior correspondent Judy Woodruff moderated a forum on service Thursday night at Columbia University in New York City with presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama. The next day, Woodruff reflected on the experience in a Reporter’s Notebook with the NewsHour’s Steve Goldbloom.

While the forum was primarily a venue to speak about service, Woodruff admitted that the candidates were on guard to protect and promote their political aspirations.

“It was an unusual day in the middle of this very hard-fought campaign in that it was 9/11. And everybody decided that this was a day to step back and to — in the spirit of 9/11 and what that date represents to this country — to sort of call a ceasefire… They both got in a few political points but by in large they really stayed true to the service mission.”

Marjorie : Excellent forum - questions were sharp and focused on service and answers were usually interesting. Thanks to both moderators for bringing up the dampening effect of negativity on volunteerism. One OFF note: Who was the very strange priest on the panel at the end? Dr. Butts was his usual inspiring, helpful self, but the older gentleman in priest's garb was sour and just plain weird. Please don't bring him back.

Malissa Anderson : I heard on NPR a senior editor for the Gallp Poles say (I think) that they have no way to pole people who have cell phones only. I am thinking that this eliminates the majority of 35 to 18 year olds. If this is what I heard, then the poles are only reflecting older citizens who have home phones. Would you please do a report on this as no one else is. I only got part of the report but if this is true then we need to know that the poles are not reflective of all. Thank you Malissa Anderson

Rexc10thMTN : On the question of "Who serves in the US Military" for John McCain posed by Judy Woodruff- the premise of her question is based upon a myth- for an analysis, see the Heritage Foundations "Who serves in the US Military? The Demographics of Enlisted Troops and Officers" by Shanea Watkins PhD and James Sherk (2008), to be found at www.heritage.org/Research/NationalSecurity/cda08-05.cfm Using a better statistical method than many other studies, the general findings show that the average citizen choosing to serve in the military does not come from the poorest census tracts, has a higher level of education (compared to their peers) and minority populations are actually underrepresented in the military (as a percentage of the population). It would be nice if the selected interrogators for "forums" and "debates" did their homework and represented the facts accurately.

Kate Coury : We are now doing the "trickle up" theory since the "trickle down" theory is not working. Problem is the middle class will take it in the chin, as usual. the middle class is now saving the behind of the rich and by God, they won't even say thank you. You watch!!

carol : Dear Miss Woodruff: You seemed surprised when it was commented that Gov. Palin had not responded to the questions. It was obvious that she was not responding to the questions; she was merely stating what she wanted to say - e.g. when asked about her achilles heel, she merely talked about her strengths...

Dianne : Judy, What do you mean "you don't think she answered the question?"? Did you watch the debate?

Jean : The comments by the candidates were not unexpected but observing the keen mental organizion and well-spoken delivery by Obama in stark contrast to the inter-cranial disorganization and rambling comments of McCain never ceases to strengthen my hope that common decency not to mention common sense will win out in the election booth. However, the decision to put Neuhaus on a position to comment was extremely poor. As noted in Time magazine, Neuhaus is a close, yet unofficial, collaborator of President George W. Bush. Neuhaus advises Bush, who simply calls him "Father Richard", on a range of religious and ethical matters, including abortion, stem-cell research, cloning, and the defense of marriage amendment. Neuhaus is a neoconservative in an organization that grows daily more dangerous to freedom in the USA. As a citizen and as a former nun, I strongly believe he has no place in such a forum, especially without declaring himself to be what he is.
