Vote 2008: Presidential Election Coverage

Presidential Race

Reporter's Notebook: Judy Woodruff Previews 'Battleground: Florida' Series

By Steve Goldbloom on September 29, 2008

Senior correspondent Judy Woodruff spoke with the NewsHour’s Steve Goldbloom about her recent reporting trip through the battleground state of Florida. The first of her three reports focuses on the economy and airs Monday.

Woodruff described the different voting groups that could potentially influence the election: “The new group we’re watching is younger voters. There are fewer of them in Florida — percentage-wise — than in other states, but what we are seeing in the university communities and elsewhere across the state is young voters very excited about this election. They could help make the difference for [Sen. Barack] Obama.”

Woodruff also spoke about Friday’s presidential debate between Sens. John McCain and Obama in Oxford, Miss.

“Both of these men are experienced. They knew what they had to do. I don’t think there was a clear winner. You could say both of them did some smart things, they did a couple things that weren’t so smart, and people are picking it to pieces. I don’t think either one in particular stood out.” Woodruff on the candidates’ debate performances.

Chuck : Disappointingly biased report. With polls even, we had to hear multiple 'lifelong Republican who will vote Democratic' testomonials.' Will Gwen Ifill be balanced on Thurs like Jim Leher was Fri, or will it be more of this PBS Bill Moyers type 'reporting?'

GatorWard : Both of these men are experienced... Woodruff on the candidates debate performances. Does this even require comment! Regardless of the substance of Ms. Woodruff's subsequent analysis, the false/misleading/biased premise that BO is "experienced" taints this piece. Furthermore, the ease in which she speaks in such a manner taints her further body of work.

JAB : To Judy Woodruff: To what extent will Obama's skin color affect the Florida vote?

sban : I just watched the Rodrigues story on Mexico and the borders and America's appetite for drugs. The questions he asks at the end of the story are SO IMPORTANT. What is happening in America - our soul, our despair, our discomfort with who we are. I think it was a terribly important piece that deserves more exploration. And, weirdly it relates to what is happening on Wall Street. America's character -- what we hope for, what we dream about, what we long for -- is so often illusion and needs some palliative that is too often destructive. Please. We need to understand the underside of our culture that creates despair and need for so many of our fellow citizens.

mbacon@orrick.com : Judy, I have no doubt that Gwen would be completely fair and balanced. However, the publication of her book (especially on inauguration day) creates the perception of a conflict of interest. If she dosen't withdraw from her moderating role, her participation will be the story, the focus of republican attacks and democratic responses, and it will detract mightily from the real story. For these reasons I urge her to withdraw now, before she, and not the debate, becomes the focus of attention. Thanks.

Dodgerstaduim1 : This is an obvious unfairness. Ifill should not be allowed to go on.

Dr. Jerry : The vote against at $700 bail out is not a failure, it is a success. Instead of buying the mortgage backed securities, enriching the rich, the government could loan against them (e.g. libor plus 1%)but not own them, so long as the government made a profit from the deal, and the banks can eventually take them back. Credit needs to be somewhat tighter because we need to save more and spend less. Tighter credit means higher interest rates which is good for savers. Gas taxes need to be higher so we can subsidize green energy like nuclear power.

harold herrington : "STOLEN VALOR'" not something to be taken lightly!JOE BIDEN claims to been shot down while in Iraq!this statement was clearly false.he tried to put himself on the same plain as Honorable WAR HERO JOHN S. MCCAIN.I would think you would remind the viewers of your stance when Hillary had done the same.we will be watching to see how bias you might be tonight, with your faverable book coming out about your ideal Obama. My personable thought is that you should remove yourself.bias tonight may not only be a factor in the candidit carear, but also your own!! harold herrington troy,ny

Patrick Lockyer : Question for debate: Mostly pregnancy is a conscious decision between loving couples and a shared experience. Would you really advocate that a teen raped should have to endure the whole nine months result of that despicable act and not get closure from it? Should she have to have her life turned upside down. Have the humiliation in the streets. Have to love the growing result? Have her relationships threatened and her plans disrupted and endure on top of that the trauma and risk of childbirth? Then the guilt/responsibility of what happens to the child? On top of that what about a child not conceived of love having a life bereft of natural desired intention?

Lynn : I feel it is in poor taste, and poor judgement to allow Gwen Eiffel to moderate a debate since she is clearly biased. It is another attempt to undermine the legitimacy of the politcal process. I feel she will skew her questions. I have watched her programs, and she is a biased person.

Linda R : Oh, come on. Judy Woodruff says, "Both these men are experienced..." I think it's a stretch to say she's talking about any kind of experience other than experience with campaigning, experience with "debating" or "arguing" their case. As for Gwen Ifill, I've watched her for years on Washington Week. I've seen her praise, and skewer, people from both sides of the aisle. I see her as a person who takes her position seriously, not as someone who uses that position to push a personal agenda. It seems to me that some people (regardless of their political or other positions) are too busy looking for bias rather than actively listening and thinking things through.

Mav : I found Gwen Eiffel very fair and intelligent as always . There was no bias in anyway on her part , whether it be composing the questions for each person or anything else . I feel she did a super job as moderater , anyone saying otherwise is just looking for something to criticize her for . You go Gwen !

Kim : If there's even the APPEARANCE of bias, the ETHICAL thing to do would be (1) inform the Presidential Debate Commission of the upcoming publication of the book, and (2) withdraw - or at least offer to do so. Eiffel didn't inform the PDC, nor did she offer to withdraw. Therefore her actions were unethical. I'm very disappointed in her. I had always held her in high regard.
