Vote 2008: Presidential Election Coverage

Presidential Race

McCain Campaign Hinges on Strong Debate Performance

By Judy Woodruff; Interviewed by Maureen Hoch on October 15, 2008

With the election less than three weeks off, senior correspondent Judy Woodruff previews the stakes for the final debate between Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain and to reflect on politics in the Land of Enchantment.

“We’re all going to be looking at John McCain tonight to see how does he change the game, what is the message, what is the new idea that he’s going to put forward that is going to change the momentum because right now, to the extent we pay attention to any polls, the momentum is clearly with Sen. Obama,” Woodruff said.

Katherine in NJ : How much more in 2009 or 2010 would Joe the Plumber pay under the Obama plan? That's one of the interesting questions. Is it $37 a year, $37 a month ... I'm an Obama supporter and I believe paying taxes is a civic responsibility--let's look at the facts and figure out what we're talking about.

Kim in California : I can't believe that the last 10 min has been devoted to bickering about the ads the two candidates have been running. I have admired John McCain since his last run for office but this is incredibly frustrating. I tuned into a debate and I'm getting drivel that has nothing to do with the issues that we need to hear about. Somebody in McCains camp needs to get McCain talking about the issues. I'm ready to turn the channel. Another undecided voter ready to vote Obama.

Chris in CA : I am an Obama supporter but I've always respected McCain and the service he's done for the country I just disagree with the direction he wants to take the country. However, I have to say I've lost a certain amount of respect for him tonight...to hear him whine about hurt feelings because of what may or may not have been said is just ridiculous. Issues, issues, issues!!! You're running for President of the United States not for Mr. Nice Guy!!

Dawa : Senator McCain has come a long way down since 2000 when he seemed likeable. Now he has become that negative oozing parrot. He keeps on repeating stupid simplified statements like "Joe, I am for you. Senator Obama is against you... blah blah." He talks as though the government of the US and the democrats are bad! He is so negative and while claiming Obama's eloquence is empty McCain's own ineloquent self is empty and negative to top it. I hope we don't end up electing NEGATIVE swift boater for a president. By the way is it only me or is McCain getting most of the last words on the questions whether he began or not?

Travis : Same "old politics" questions from Bob, I am very disappointed in his abortion and mudslinging questions. Despite "boring" first 2 debates they were on the issues at hand. This is sensationalism and hype of network media.

Jed S. : Can someone please tell John McCain that a Federalist (a political philosophy he claims as his own) favors a strong Federal government, and is not consistent with his view that State's Rights prevail! The man needs to open a history book!

Patti W : McCain looks like he's going to shoot out of his chair. He continues to distort Obama's record and acts angry that anyone might try to disagree with McCain's contentions. It's my understanding McCain campaign report shows more Obama money going to advertisements, BUT percentage-wise less to negative ads. Patronizing, condescending.

Dawa : So what if McCain has adopted a child? Does that excuse the fact that a woman who may be in danger of dying from childbirth complications has to die to save a fetus? A woman has parents, sibling's and friends and another associations and feelings of love and affection in life that makes her human. A fetus has not developed these felings and other associations in life yet. If there has to be choice between the two it should be the woman. Let's not get too carried away by what IS is or else we might soon be denied the right to breathe for fear we may take the lives of germs that may go into our windpipes.

Dawa La : I thought that since Acorn and Ayres were brought up Keating Five and Cindy MccCain's drug theft when she was addicted should have been brought in too. It is important that Mrs. McCain's theft of drugs should be brought in because people should be let to know what kind of first lady they may be getting. It is as, Senator McCain often says a matter of "trust."

MarciaH : As a woman, I was appalled to hear two McCain statements: that he considers Palin a role model for women after she has been found guilty of abuse of power, and that he considers caring about the health of a mother to be an extreme position. It's no wonder that he has lost the majority woman vote.

William Eon : John McCain, 26 years in the Senate and he takes no responsibility for what is wrong with America. He is the Problem. Tinkle down Economics never worked. McNasty/Bush what's the difference. Tired old Republican Politics that promise everything and deliver nothing except Tax cuts for Billionaires. Welfare for Corporations. Bailouts for Bankers. Where is Main street Joe in that mix? Tinkle Down Economics and Business as usual is a thing of the Past. Out with the McNasty/Bush and in with the New. Put him out to pasture. So much for death warmed over.

Ben T : My small company pays an average of $12,000 per employee ( a mix of young and middle aged employees). Taxing that benefit would add $2,500 to $3,500 in addtional taxes to my employees. If our company kept the plan under the McCain plan and each were given a $5,000 tax credit to buy insurance would pay an minimum of $9,500 a year more than it costs them today.

Mitchell in CA : Mostly the same-o. But. The TV direction was different. There was an obvious effort not the show one senator when the other was speaking. I missed McCain winching & cringing. McCain did nothing to change the direction of the election that was visible.

thinkinwoman : McCain was given the perfect opportunity to turn his campaign around last night--THAT PERFECT MOMENT EVERYONE WOULD HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT TODAY AND FOR THE NEXT 3 WEEKS: When the issue of nasty rally slurs and threatening comments came up, he should have stood up, looked straight into the camera and said: "My Friends, I am in charge of MY campaign. I am going on record tonight to say ENOUGH! I will not tolerate the hateful and threatening comments that have been overheard at my campaign rallies and that potentially put my honorable opponent, Senator Obama, and his family at risk. I will not tolerate this and it must stop NOW! I have spoken to my running mate, Sarah Palin, and she now understands that there is no room for this kind of garbage in my campaign. So, my friends, we are better than that. Let's win the White House on the issues. Instead, McCain went out this morning and told all of his rally supporters--and the entire world--how "proud he is" of the the folks who have been showing up and vocalizing at his rallies. That was "ALL" of them, including the bigoted, racist and ethnocentric yahoo's that are tanking his campaign. You know...the ugly Americans that the world has come to know. A missed opportunity, Senator McCain. You had your chance. It's too late now.

stacey : I wonder if I have been watching the same debates and interviews as everyone else. Obama uses his words carefully--we'll look into that and the real question here is... He is an eloquent speaker when given a prepared speech and a telepromptor. McCain speaks from the heart and seems to truely have our country and its citizens' best interest when he talks. As far as Joe the plumber's small business tax increases and large corporation tax increases, has anyone ever taken an economics course? Who do you think we all work for? We work for business owners--if they are taxed more, do you think they are going to take the pay cut? No, they are going to pass it on to the employee by laying them off or cutting back hours or pass it on to the consumers with higher prices or move their business out of the country to avoid the taxes? Business tax cuts help the American worker and consumer. This is truely "speading the wealth". Don't use my hard earned paycheck to spead the wealth to someone who doesn't even work. I'll be voting for McCain so I can keep MY money.
