Vote 2008: Presidential Election Coverage

Presidential Race

Obama Camp Flexes Spending Power with 30-min. Primetime Ad Buy

By Alexis Matsui on October 9, 2008

Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign will air a half-hour special on CBS on Oct. 29 at 8 p.m., the network reported, adding that the campaign is in talks with NBC and Fox for similar deals.

The ad buy is the latest evidence of the Obama campaign’s massive campaign funds. Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain, who is subject to the limitations accorded with accepting public funding, has been spending much less across the country than his opponent, and has not reported plans to make a similar primetime purchase.

“This is another indication, if there needs to be any more, that Barack Obama’s got more money than television time to buy,” Campaign Media Analysis Group head Evan Tracey said, according to James Hibbard’s The Live Feed.

Political analyst Larry Sabato told The Live Feed that while such a buy has been uncommon in recent elections, Independent presidential candidate and billionaire Ross Perot made a similar move in the 1992 election. During the 1960s and 1970s, primetime television buys were much more frequent “before campaigns began to focus their end game strategies exclusively on battleground states.”

Sabato said the ad buy is in line with Obama’s strategy, which aims to appeal to both local and national markets.

“Obama’s theme is not just change but unity, so he’s appealing to the whole nation rather than a handful of toss-up states,” he said.

The Obama special on CBS would alter the airtimes for “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” which would be pushed back and pre-empt “Gary Unmarried.”

gadb49 : So Senator (or should I say preordained President )Obama reneges on his promise to campaign fairly by accepting public funding and ends up buying his own television program? No surprise there. Why spend money responsibly, when you can buy votes via internet, TV and radio ads? Afterall, Americans can neither read nor reason, so why, USA, are we wasting public funds on holding an election? Truth, fairness and an informed electorate are so passe'. Don't need votes! WE GOT TV!

dv8 : why don't the candidates suspend all TV spending and donate those billions to poor american families in financial distress? I for 1 do not need any more repetition of the mud-slinging. it is obscene to be wasting so much money when so many who have done the right thing by working and saving are losing it all.

katzmeow : If Junior Senator Obama is so concerned about the individuals in foreclosure or just having problems buying groceries or gas, why does HE not donate instead of spending obscene amounts of money trying to buy votes from couch potatoes or internet junkies? He does not care about the country. He's just a megalomaniac trying to make presidential history by being the first non-white to take office, and he does not care who he steps on to get there.

BJ : We conservatives do not trust a left-wing socialist like Obama. Smooth talking, seemingly saying the right words, but past record indicates a different philosophy. He has no experience (less than Palin) and will create a larger government. Will allow unborn babies to be terminated (even in third trimester), anti-firearms (even in your own home), Tax relief (only for certain groups, not for everyone), mentored by Rev. Wright, and will continue to bash President Bush whenever possible. Now tell us, how can this man (Obama) unite us? His "Change" will be a negative one, mark my words!

They want to take our hard earned money to give to their friends. (Rev. Phleger wants our 401Ks. Chad : Why cannot TV and Radio stations give each canidate equal time free of charge and vastly reduce the amount of money each canidate has to raise. When you need so much money, it leads to canidates having to give special attention to those donors which in turn causes our canidates to be responsible to donors and not to the American People. The FCC regulates the airways, why not mandate that the stations do this?

NOT an obama-mama! : I think if CBS, who is obviously Pro-Obama, sells time to Obama for his political campaign, they should have to give free equal time to John McCain, who is honorably dealing with the limitations imposed upon him by accepting public funding. John McCain is a man of honor, unlike Obama, who initially said he was "for limiting his campaign to public funding"... until he decided he was against it. But what else would you expect from a Chicago and Cook County politician like Obama? A guy who sells his honor to Tony Rezko for a mansion and who knows what else ... to be continued pre sentencing!

Dintym : "why don't the candidates suspend all TV spending and donate those billions to poor american families in financial distress" That is just another form of redistribution of wealth. It's the same BO's (Barack Obama's) plan to "save" ruin America. Take money from those who work for it and give it to those that don't want to work (called the "less fortunate").

Where will all that money go (what's left after the market fall?) Talk about tax cuts are not completely true. A "tax cut" that gives money to those who DO NOT pay ANY taxes is WELFARE. It a form of modern day "Robin Hood", taking from the rich and giving to the lazy.

Sue : I am surprised that PBS airs shows that are bias to parties such as Bill Moyers, especially since funds to run PBS are donations made by the public. I also agree that the spending of campaign money is absolutely ridiculous. With all that money being spent, how could we possible be going into a recession? Seriously, there really should be a limit as to how much a candidate should be able to spend and it shouldn't be any where near what it is today. There also should be a limit on time spent as well. We certainly know who McCain and Obama are by now........why the urgency to spend all that money on prime time TV to tell more lies?

One Beer Joe : The media is so bias against McCain/Palin; I feel like I am in Russia, China or Venezuela. Joe Biden said he will take from the rich and give to the poor and B O just said he will take from the rich and spread the wealth. Am I in a Russia or China or Venezuela or not. Taking from the rich and give it to poor is a myth. Various Robin Hood been doing this century after century, but he always get the castle, he always get richer and also the lady. 35 years ago I was paid at 75 cent an hour. I can buy 3 gallons of gas. Now the minimum wage around 600 cents an hour and which can buy 1.5 gallons of gas. Does “This take from the rich and give to the poor” really help the poor? Do you think for a moment the rich is not going to get that money back from the poor or the middle class via higher cost of products like food, gas, utility, schooling, automobile, even soap, etc we have to buy from them? Today the poor is at 50% poorer. The poor is getting poorer. The Robin Hood is getting richer. May be what B.O. and Biden trying to say is that they will take from the poor, the middle class and fatten their own pockets in the process of spreading the wealth. How people become a multimillionaire with a community organizer salary? PBS is supposed to be neutral. Juan William is so bias against McCain, Palin and Hillary, we need to stop donation to NPR and PBS.

R A : It is everyone's responsibility to know about the candidate they want to lead the country. how do they know? 1. Government is not playing any role or putting an effort to provide correct information to us regarding the candidates. 2. We ourself don't spend enough time to do the same. 3. We rely on other resources (main stream media, news paper, internet etc) to know the candidates. Hence it is for the candidates to make sure they let us know who they are, how they will lead the country going farward. Hence they have to spend money. Imagine if that doesn't happen,How do you get the information to make the decision? 4. I am surprised why government does not have any guidelines for candidates to avoid negative Campaign.

RO : I am for sure not one of those poor people who have no brains to not be able to figure out what Obama really is, how much brain power does it take to read right through those silly childish grins and so called smooth talk coming from him, can't people really see that or are they just plain blind to the truth?? At the last debate every time a truth was brought out by McCain Obama would get one of those snide grins on his face and to me that number one is disrespectful and very childish, like grade school. As for him spending all of that money on a "specia" TV broadcast can't people see through all the money he is spending and did they ever ask themself where he got all that money to be spending??? Don't they understand that his millions he's spending could feed so many of our people right here in our country that are going hungry or have lost or loosing their homes, some going without medical care because they can't afford it and here he is spending like it's pocket change, wake up Americans it's time you pull your head out of the sand, he's doing nothing but buying your votes and you (the one's supporting and voting for Obama) are buying his line of crap and Biden's to, he's nothing but a hot head, in my opinion Sarah Palin has much more experience than Obama and at least has brought much good to many in Alaska and she sure isn't afraid to tell it like it is but the news media is so biased and wants to push their opinions off on everyone that they can't stand it when she won't talk to them............well media I sure don't blame her, the matter of fact you are so jealous that she has more brains and done more than any of you that you just can't stand it so you have to join in with Obama and act like grade school kids. As for John McCain there isn't any of you in the media can hold a candle to that man who stood up for his country and fought for our freedom, he is still continuing to do so and as for Obama did he ever ever serve one day in the military fighting for our country??????? Does he even have a clue of what it's like to fight for the USA??? Of course he don't and he's saying he's going to do all these things.........he has no idea where to even start, heaven help us all if he is elected and all of you voting for him and all of you news media promoting him and downing McCain/Palin hopefully won't be able to close your eyes and sleep at night knowing you put our country in such danger it will be because of all of you and the rest of us will at least know we did the right thing in trying to get the right people into the white house and that's McCain/Palin

For someone who says he is concerned about the middle class,he spends money like a drunken sailor, when he could be helping the people he is targeting to vote for him. He didn't do much as a Chicago Senator, how can we expect him to do any good as President. A vote for change is vote for Chicago corrupt Politics and Socialism.

If one is wanting to run a country, they'll have to be a little stronger back bonned than that! Bone head. You know for some, listening to a charismatic smooth talker, can put you in a trance that can defy all logic and plugs the ears and then calling it "Negative Campaigning", rather than seeking clear and truthful answers to proven facts. LL : This is the WORST campaign year we've had. From the bottom up - county commissioners, governors, senate & the House candidates. I'm so sick of all the lies, accusations, the attacks from everyone! It's really bad that when you hear something, that you're running to FACT CHECK to see if it's true or not. And sometimes I wonder who is "funding" that website. The amount of money being spent on the SAME rhetoric is ridiculous. I do not even understand why they are WASTING the gas to slug the big buses, the PRIVATE AIRPLANES to every county in every state. The money spent on this campaign is absolutely uncalled for. I'm have voted in every election since 1981 (the first one I could vote for) and am very diligent in listening to everything in papers, all channels (although this year have been BIAS-DEMOCRATIC). I knew all the issues, or thought I did. I don't answer my phone because I know it's a campaign calling. (WHERE IS MY PRIVACY? I have not given ANYONE MY NUMBER in ANY PARTY) I'm done watching all the news channels - public and cable - because it's the same nonsense. Do you notice how many "experts" are on these channels? Half of what they say is NONSENSE. I will give credit to Lou Dobbs for getting out information that I do not see on other channels. here's something I came across: just an interesting look at how elections are just getting longer and more negative. http://www.aei.org/publications/pubID.20492/pub_detail.asp quit spending the money, I say, to all politicians. we've heard enough. we've seen banks collapse, people thrown on the streets because of the lack of regulation for loans... we're broke. the ENTIRE country is broke! spend that money you'd spend on a 30-second commercial (or that upcoming 30 MINUTE commercial - no idea how much $$ that is costing for all the channels - that Obama is putting on the airwaves).. put it where THE AMERICAN PEOPLE need it: to the AMERICAN PUBLIC. You know, the ONE'S you NEED our votes from.

The way he spent his money has reached an unbelievable point. I assumed my vote for him. But I want to hold it now. By the way, he didn't seem to have any tolerance for criticism from others. Tampa mom : When I talk about this election the main thing I hear is people want change and they think Obama will give them the change they want. What change do you want? and all i get is I want change. The thinking is so shallow and irrational and I am in disbelief that the American people have been hoodwinked into thinking Obama will give them the change we need. Obama has no record of making change happen, will surround himself with those who have a far left agenda and not concern himself with reaching across the table for the good of the country. McCain/Palin do have a record of reaching across the table and of getting things done. They will bring to the white house people from both sides of the table and make changes that will keep our country and our economy safe and strong. With an Obama presidency our country will be neither. The hard work of those of us who pay taxes and the innovation of the American people found in small businesses all around this country will wane. We are already on the way to being a third rate country same as Europe if we don't make some change to our economy and get back to the basics of capitalism. Without a strong economy there will be no diplomacy needed, and litte we can do to defend ourselves against those who hate us. Yes we need change, but BO is not the kind of change this country needs. Just look at all the money he has backing him. If you think any of that money following him will find it's way to help the American people get back on it's feet, you are wrong.

Is this how we want our money spent? On TV ads and buying network air time? That just gives the already over paid entertainment industry even more money and does NOT help out the 'little' guy who actually makes 10 dollars an hour! Linda : Only ignorant Americans will decide to move from a working form of Capitalism to a third world country form of Socialism. If Obama is elected, he will make himself King, but he will have the American TV junkies and those who cannot think for themselves worshipping him. He will make Americans dependent on the government, which will ultimately destroy us. Ever seen the movie V for Vendetta? If Obama is elected, that is what this country will become. Americans should not be fearful of their government, Government should be fearful of their people! Obama is so self absorbed. No other presidential canidate has ever spent so much money on a campaign for his own glory! His mud-slinging strategy to a National War Hero who has a long line of family members who dedicated their lives to serving the United States and ensuring your freedom and mine! Obama want to take away our right to protect ourselves. If we give the government complete control over our lives like Obama has suggested in a very manipulated manner, we will have absolutely nothing. Obama does NOT care about America, he only cares about himself. Hitler was a wonderful orator. He had personality, charm, charisma. He was a 'change' for Germany after the first World War. He blamed Germany's problems on the Jews, but he did not stop there. He was trying to make the perfect race, which he himself did not fall into the requirements. He was able to persuade Germans to join his army and kill hundreds of thousands. Obama has ties to terrorist, but yet the media is quick to cover that up. It matter's who someone's friends are. Why would you be friends with someone who has such radically different beliefs than himself? I do not believe they are all that different. I'm not saying Obama is Hitler, but I am saying that Change is not always for the better. The change Obama is promising will make this country worse off than it is now. Obama is not a true American patriot, and won't even give up his Birth Certificate,so he may not even be a true American in any sense. How can anyone elect a man who won't even put his hand over his heart for our flag? His wife is not even proud to be an American until her husband decided to run for president! You are either proud to be an American and show it, or you aren't. This is a family who wants to run the greatest nation on earth, but aren't even proud of the people they will be working for! This man is NOT the change this country needs. We need a man who has spent his entire life serving this Country. Serving YOU and ME. Working every day to ensure our Freedom. A first lady who worked with Mother Theresa! Obama has not shown the strength or courage to make Change happen with any experience he has had in his life. McCain has shown over and over that he has the strength, courage, and dedication to make this country better!

Neither candidate has refrained from spending millions of dollars. Why is it incumbent on one as opposed to the other to stop spending money? Also, does anyone spell check?

Jan : I just have to share this "joke". THIS IS A NONPARTISAN JOKE THAT CAN BE ENJOYED BY ALL PARTIES! NOT ONLY THAT, it is POLITICALLY CORRECT!!.......and so timely! While walking down the street one day a US senator is tragically hit by a truck and dies. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance. 'Welcome to heaven,' says St. Pete r. 'Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you.' 'No problem, just let me in,' says the senator. 'Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity.' 'Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,' says the senator. 'I'm sorry, but we have our rules.' And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him. Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne. Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go. Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises. The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him. 'Now it's time to visit heaven.' So, 24 hours pass with the senator joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns. 'Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity.' The senator reflects for a minute, then answers: 'Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.' So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above... The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. 'I don't understand,' stammers the senator. 'Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?' The devil looks at him, smiles and says....... 'Yesterday we were campaigning. Today you voted.' To all of you Obama fans - If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Now go to this link for more info (not trash or smears - just plain truth) on Barack Hussein Obama: http://hotair.com/archives/2008/10/21/the-comprehensive-argument-against-barack-obama/

Tom 2324 : What a discouraging electino year! We have both cantidates wanting to give away our money to those who got themselves into foreclosure (either through stupidity or greed) without demanding any sacrifice (make qualification requirements for any program--you cannot own a cell phone, you cannot get cable tv, you cannot get internet). To make matters worse we have a cantidate who lies about his association with liars (former heads of Fannie Mae and Countrywide--both on his campaign committee), racists (Rev. Wright--"I sat in the church for 20 years but I didn't listen to a word he said"), and a group whose sole function is to undermine the one-man-one-vote principle and the media accepts every flimsy explanation. The explanations are sounding more and more like the O.J. excuse of "see, the glove doesn't fit".

Cindy : I was born and raised in a country that was based on capitalism and a free market economy. Now people everywhere are labeling this system as evil and unfair. If you work hard for your money, why shouldn't you get to keep it? My mother was a single parent and we struggled when I was a child, but she would have NEVER taken a handout from the government or anyone else. She taught me that if you work hard and get an education, you can be successful in life. But now, we have out-of-touch politicians telling me that because I spent my life working hard, saving and investing money, not buying things I couldn't afford, and behaving responsibly --- now I have to share it with everyone else who chose not to do these things. I will never understand this point of view, and I'm seriously afraid of where our country is headed if our politicians head down the path of socialism.

jnl : For one why are you so upset on how BO has decided to spend his campaign money. You act as if he is going into his own pocket. His CAMPAIGN decides how the money is to be spent. Now you want to give John "Insane" the same amount of time on air....But I thought you didnt like to "spread the wealth". Just as BO has raised money, John "Insane" could have raised his too. He chose to over spend in states he wont win. That is his fault. Now the old guy wants to cry when he doesnt have the money to compete in advertising. Wait, must I get on Palin too. The same woman that doesnt want sex education in schools is the same woman that has a pregnant teenager in her home....But here is the shocker....I cant wait to see the look on the republicans faces when they find out that the baby is indeed MIXED!

joeufromcali : Well lets see let the biggest choice go to Mclame. Or straight out pay for 30 minutes of straight airtime instead of 2minutes here 3 there. On smear tactics. He did the right thing laid out his plan clearly and if you think hes a socialist. Think again Bush leans more towards a socialistic regime than any dem. Think about it he bails out and helps the oil companies and CEO'S of major corporations. Gives Paulson unprecidented power over our financial solvency. Socialistic governments increase the power they have over the general population. Taking control over the treasury is a huge socialistic step. And Bush pushed Pualson in and Mclame wanted to make sure he was there to help it get pushed. Tell the truth stop trying to sway votes to the loser party. The repugs and bush cronies will get hammered this Nov 4th. Those long lines are all for OBAMA Time for a change.

joeyfromcali : Oh by the way I love how Mr Mccain has brainwashed idiots into believing that using taxpayer money instead of using public donations is the higher ground. Yeah make all Americans support his Jet and Palins haircuts and Piggy makeup. I am so happy to pay for it. So much for that conservative argument. Get off the sauce read a book once and a while and stop fact checking at your local church. Even Your bible says not to mix mans laws with gods laws. The republican party sold out the USA to the Highest bidder. It has been happening the last 8 years Offshoring jobs Huge corporate tax breaks. Bush implying the economy was better than it was (AKA Lying) See a pattern yet Or is the wool still blinding you.
