Reporter's Notebook: Judy Woodruff Discusses Final Push for the Presidency

By Steve Goldbloom on October 31, 2008

With just four days left before the election, Judy Woodruff spoke with the NewsHour’s Steve Goldbloom about what she has learned from following the presidential polls and the campaign trail. On Election Day, Woodruff will file reports for broadcast and online from Illinois until a winner is announced.

“The polls are showing an advantage for Barack Obama…It doesn’t mean that that’s what’s going to happen on Election Day, but, it does mean that John McCain has a higher mountain to climb going into Nov. 4 than Senator Obama does.

Mike Morrison : In a very few days the election politics will be gone. I hope this Nation can address another problem. It is said that more than 700,000 young men and women will return with disabilities. One in five are calculated to have TBI or Concussion impact head injuries. While this may not be the topic of the day it is one we need to address. A new 501-C3 foundation in San Diego has been formed by disabled veterans for disabled veterans. They plan to do this with manufacturing facilities for a sustainable green product. Please check on th Work For Life site at www.w4lp.org and the company they will perform this with at www.peiworldwide.com> It is my belief that they have addressed the day to day problems of veterans with disabilities working together. This foundation will fill a badly needed assistance.

Dr John Cameron : Gidday, Perth, Western Australia is about as far from the centre of action as one can get, but there is still enormous interest. However, three features of United States elections continue to astonish me. Firstly, that the election is held on what for most folk must be a working day. Secondly, that it takes so long to vote. I recently voted in the State Election here where voting is compulsory. I overlooked voting until late in the day. I was still at the polling station for less than 10 minutes. Thirdly, that in a number of States a felony conviction deprives one of voting rights for life, and in most State serving prisoners are deprived of the franchise. In Australia a conviction does not deprive the convicted person of voting rights. Our High Court recently held that a prisoner serving a sentence of less than three years is entitled to vote. Disenfranchisement impacts hardest on African Americans and to a lesser extent Latinos, yet this appears to be of little concern to anyone, including the ACLU with whom I raised the issue in talks some four years ago. By way of footnote, in a recent poll Australians who thought that Senator Obama was more likely to raise the stature of the United States in the world than Senator McCain outnumbered others by four to one.
