Commenter: Kenneth

helped.for the rich to become even richer.

While banks benifitted from a near zero prime interest rate and reaped record profits little of this was passed on to the consumer in lower interest loans for cars and housing. To stimulate puchasing in a down economy lenders should have been required to pass a higher percentage of their winfall to borrowers.

Commenter: IMO
Heck ya the stimulus has effect on our economy. The huge debt it created will cool any US economic recovery for next 1-2 decades. Meaningless debt never stimulates economic recovery. No government can "create" jobs or grow economy. The government only sets sideboard regulation for an economy to function within. Throwing borrowed money into the economy just digs the holes deeper, which will slow recovery and retard growth. Basic Econ 101... (That's why EU requires member States to limit debt to <3% of their GDP. US member States must balance their budgets, but our USA is walking on the wildside and set-up for huge $$$ retraction. The price of Gold hasn't gone up that much, the US dollar has been de-valued and has actually dropped that much. Let's all put our heads back into the sand now...)

Commenter: Patrick
No.. We print up money to give away to corporations so they don't go under. It should have been handled through private means. We would never have had the problem if it wasn't for Carter and Clinton. Appointing idiot so to run fannie mae and freddie mac. Then our democratic congress and senate would not allow oversight over either of them.

Commenter: TODD
I THINK OBAMA'S STIMULUS PLAN DOESN'T MAKE MUCH SENSE. IT IS SET UP AS A STEPPED PLAN WITH A MAJORITY OF THE MONEY IS DELAYED TILL THE SECOND YEAR, WHY? IF THE BANKS,AUTO MFG AND STATES NEEDED THE MONEY NOW THEN WHY DIDN'T THE AVERAGE TAXPAYER GET THE SAME BENEFIT.
AGAIN GOVERNMENT LISTENS TO THE LOBBYIST BEFORE THEY LISTEN TO THEIR "BOSSES". THE STIMULUS IS TOO LITTLE TOO LATE JOBS ARE NEEDED BEFORE HEALTH REFORM OR CARBON TAXES!

Commenter: Mike in MD
The stimulus legislation has not saved our economy. To the contrary, it has stifled the recovery of small business, squeezed out commerce with government spending, and has saddled our next and future generations with wasteful new debt.

Commenter: Seiu Member
The stimulus has vastly hurt the economy more than helped. Much of the stimulus funds were channeled into earmarks championed by special interests, and did little for the economy. Since he took office more than 2 million jobs were lost. The unemployment rate which hovered around 7% shot up to 10% on his watch. In order to win support for the stimulus, he lied that it would keep unemployment below 8%.
Obama the candidate promised fiscal discipline and adherence to PAYGO. But after getting elected, Obama more than tripled the fiscal deficit. These are just examples of Obama's litany of lies. His excuse as always is that the Teleprompter made him do it.

Commenter: William Beers
Federal stimulus money was a designed political ploy, it was suppose to be for shovel ready programs. Oddly those shovel ready programs seem to kick in just in time for the midterm elections. Recovery.gov claims that 26 million dollars of that stimulus allegedly created 142 jobs in Florida's 27th congressional district, oddly enough Florida only has 25 congressional districts. In Tampa Florida $650,000.00 created 230 jobs in a Davis Island Hillsborough Community College office that only has 26 employees. I might not be as well educated as the lofty PBS staff but I can do the math

Commenter: e148
In a word NO. Where are the shovel ready projects? There have been no jobs created. The few that may have been saved, temporarily, are government jobs.

Also, an increase in temporary jobs, does not mean that 'permanent' jobs are just around the corner. What's more I think it has been that way for several years now, especially in the high-tech fields.

Commenter: Jamie M
NO! In the past year, I've yet to land a job.
With all the czars; blue ribbon commissions, including BHO's signing off on his wife's "obesity" project, the ONLY openings are in government and unions. We The People are sick of his lies!

Commenter: Patricia Stephens
It took years to put us in this mess and it will take more than a couple years to get us out. How do we get back our outsoursed jobs to other countries, expecially manfucaturing jobs. Pick up just about anything and it is made in China, who we have to borrow from because there is not enough jobs so people can pay taxes.
Does that make any sense?
I saw it comming when we were training Chineese here in our country for a factory that our company built in China. Now a China company owns that factory because the stock holders couldn't wait any longer for the profits to fill their pockets so they voted to sell it.
We need new technolgy that China can't take from us. They chose to be a closed society and now they open up and copy other tecnology that we invented and now we are forced to buy the products from China because our factories and industries closed.

It's going to take years to change this mess.

Commenter: Jon
In short, No! The stimulus has just gotten us into deeper debt as a country. If the government would just step oput of the way and quit paying homage to its faithful electorate that gave them money and let capitalism reign then the country's jobs will come back. Lying to the American public like he has is not boding well for him. He has continually said that he will create a transparency in government when in fact it is the same old, same old methods used for years. He is still campaigning for President and will continue to do so until and through the next Presidential election in 2012. Havingh a desire to accomplish something doesn't mean he has the ability. He is way over his head and his handlers are misguiding him to do what they want him to do rather than do what is right for the country. This administration has become such a farce it is incredible. The beginning of this recession started when the Democrats started to say we were in a recession for the primary. I do not feel sorry for them one bit because the Demopcrats put us here. The prolonged recession was their fault from the beginning. Look at the numnbers of GDP and production prior to the election cycle. It is all a political root cause.

Commenter: Thor
Question was: "federal stimulus has significantly helped the economy" ???
I believe the stimulus has temporarily filled some minor potholes in our economy. But the only item stimulus has "significantly" affected has been the national debt. Putting a very expensive band-aid on economic trouble symptoms does not cure the underlying economic cancer.
The current Recovery Act (stimulus) was a high priced, minor shot of caffeine, which will wear off quickly. The stimulus created debt will be much more detrimental to our economy long-term. The Band-Aid fix appears to have failed to provide a durable repair to our economy.
Answer: No..., federal stimulus has not "significantly" helped the overall USA economy.

Commenter: Patrick Gorey
I think his leadership saved the country from a total economic collapse.
