Poster: Betty Jean Green Comment: The American public is waking up to the problem. But will that lead to the grassroots pressure on state and federal legislators which will change the direction of politics? As an individual we can feel helpless, but together we can push for change. Some cities and states aren't waiting for the federal government to move. Poster: Lois Waldron Comment: No, the majority of Americans do not take global warming seriously. They only cried when gas prices we over $3/gallon and it cost close to $100 to fill their SUVs. Now prices are down slightly and the hybrids are out of favor. Americans have been conditioned expect the quick fix, anything lasting beyond 12 months to resolve is off the to do list. The MSM gives them an 'issue du jour' and that's where their attention is focused. Poster: Luis Comment: Seriously? have you paid any attention to the number of SUVs on the roads of America, Hallooww Poster: Jo Curry Comment: The majority of Americans are too scientifically illiterate to understand global warming and other human assaults on the environment; hence the popularity of right-wing radio and television programs that consider such assaults as liberal hoaxes. Poster: Beverly Burtner Comment: I believe that our country is blind when it comes to what is really happening to us. We are allowed by big business to become so indebted that all we can think about is work and how to pay for all the toys that they have allowed us to charge on credit cards and all the while believing that we can afford to do this. We are the innocent being led to the slaughter by big business. Bush is the puppet that is in charge because he will let big business do what ever it wants to do to fill its coffers, not caring what happens to our world. It is sad that most of our citizens cannot see what is ahead, or maybe it is a blessing. I don't think we have a chance to save our environment as long as big business runs the world. Poster: Audrey Schechter Comment: To me global warming means the extinction of many species of animals. Unfortunately it doesn't include MAN. A pity. Poster: Wayne P. Kleinfelter Comment: This Administration and for the most part, the American people just don't get it. Wake up America big business and politics are cutting your throats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Poster: Andy Galligan Comment: It does not seem to me that American society as a whole takes the threat of global warming seriously enough to be willing to make the personal sacrifices that would be required to reverse the trend at the present time. Among other things we are overly attached (addicted?) to fossil-fuel-driven modes of transportation and maufacturing, things that are seemingly essential to our economy, while others bury their heads in the sand and proclaim there is no real problem here. We simply don't want to change the comfortable way of life that we have. It would take real leadership and political will to make the change, and those things are sorely lacking right now. Poster: Linda Comment: Global warming reminds me of the Y2K thing, it is an abstract concept to most of us. When we power up the computer and it works we don't really care how those ones and zeros interact with the nines. Those who are actually understand of all of the complexaties that involve the make up of global warming are being confined to oposing camps, and have taken such a my way or the highway stand. We have given the ability to have actual debate to those who spin and we no longer trust what we are being told. We do not choose actions because they are the right thing to do for the survival of our species because the arguments have not been framed in those terms. It is much like healthcare and dependance on oil. Until there is actual in your face price increase you do not feel that it is affecting you. It will take a Katrina disaster or a committed governental leadership or an entrapuneral profit margin, before it will be addressed. Poster: James Tribble Comment: It is what it is! Mendacity, is the New Order by king george. Global self-destruction is proceeding as ordered. Analagous to Vietnam: To save them, we destroy! Poster: Christina Comment: The entire structure of daily society in the US is completely and utterly pro global warming. From the pre packaged foods, to the plastic bags, to the gas guzzling cars, to the highways, the parking lots, to the air conditioning, elevators, to the bottled soda, and cans, to plastics ad nauseum, from the washing machine to the drier to the TV and the computer, ones every movement and thought in this society is polluting. No, Americans are not aware how artifical their lives are, and how each inch of artificiality leads to another ton of carbon dioxide emissions. Poster: Cindy Comment: The American public does take the threat of global warming seriously. It is the President who continues to deny what it happening to our world every day. The President will veto any controls on industry as a result of global warming. Bush continues to support big business who got him selected for office 2004 and there are still enough GOP elected that support this President with their rubberstamp voting to prevent any over ride of a veto. 2008 cannot come soon enough... Poster: Walter Purvis Comment: I think a portion of the American People do, but not enough to make the difference. Most people are aware but are having so much trouble making ends meet they don't have time to get involved in the issue. Others don't care, like a great many Republicans, who only yell when the price of gas goes way up and it hurts when they need to fill their Hummers. Poster: Phoebe Comment: Absolutely not, this is a ticking time bomb and we are down to the last few minutes. I have been concerned and hearing about global warming and the necessary steps to diminish it for 25 years and would never have believed then how little progress we have made. As a nation it is disgraceful that we are still debating and not acting. Fund alternative energy sources now and stop feeding the greedy mouth of big oil. Poster: Robin Meiklejohn Comment: I do not think the majority of our citizenry DOES take global warming seriously. I hope that our extreme weather events, that go beyond certain predictable cycles, will open more eyes. ...parenthetically, I would say that it sure has been cold here in southwestern Colorado....brrr.... Poster: Gilda Taylor, Portland, OR Comment: With the bizarre weather and the overwhelming melt of the polar plates, I think not only Americans, but people in developed countries have become more aware. Taking it more to heart, rather than it being something out there that we can't do anything about is the real question. What will we do about it and how well will we do it? There must be more leadership from government and I don't see that happening, especially from an administration that is only now giving recognition to the problem. Poster: Jim Campbell Comment: The re-election of George W. Bush in 2004 illustrates the fact that the American public is out touch with world concerns on global warming Poster: garry webster Comment: american society is not taking the problem seriously, because of the Bush administrations intranginles and mis-information. the american people are bein duped. Poster: Ali Houshyar Comment: Hypocrocy at its peak! Despite of a chase by the world community to join in, we are still running away. Then we preach to them how to live their lives! Poster: Kent Borden Comment: I think part of American society feels they are helpless in the fight against global warming. The other part of American society is simply ambivalent about it or is too ignorant to understand what is taking place. It is my opinion that many in our society have never really experienced a true crisis which required them to sacrifice anything in their lives. We're a society conditioned to think we are entitled to everything we have. The thought of having to make sacrifices is not only alien to many Americans, it is unacceptable. To answer your question, American society absolutely does not take global warming seriously. |
