I've been impressed with your creative format that presents often complex current affairs in accessible and intelligent ways. The program on God and Global Warming is another winner! (I also enjoyed the Sept 2006 PBS program Is God Green, presented by Bill Moyers.) As part of an evangelical international graduate school of Christian Studies (REGENT COLLEGE, Vancouver, Canada) I'm pleased to let you know that this weekend (Nov 2-3, 2007) we will be hosting -- Creating Wealth & the Created World -- a conference on business and the environment co-sponsored by Regent's Marketplace Institute and A Rocha, a world-wide organization promoting Christians in Conservation. As someone who is an evangelical and a graduate of the University of California I understand the concerns of those on both sides of the issue. I thought your broadcast was balanced and enlightening. As an evangelical, I am concerned humankind show stewardship for God's creation. As an American I am concerned economics and ethics need to work hand in hand to construct a better future for our children and those who will come after us. I would like to see further shows on this subject as well as others that examine how evangelicals and others are working together to explore other important issues of our time. Thank you for presenting both sides in a positive light and not falling into the trap of favoring one side over the other. As Americans, I think we all need to work together to better our nation and world no matter what our religious beliefs or scientific persuasions. Poster: Bruce Herman Comment: As a believing evangelical Christian, I am surprised every time I encounter another believer who is skeptical about the reality of an endangered world in which we live. The Bible tells of many examples of human error bringing about catastrophic effects on the human and natural environments. The blueprint for a balanced, peaceful, and caring human civilization is offered in the pages of the Bible. Why is it that the people who believe in God and God's way resist the implications of environmental degradation brought about by failed stewardship and creation-care? It think it is sadly a result of credulity and lack of critical thinking on the part of Christians. Somehow we shelve our intellect when taboo subjects are raised -- and among those taboos is the questioning of the artificial connection between Christian faith and capitalistic practices. I'm grateful for the PBS show on Alaska, and for Dr. Cizik and the other Christian leaders and their scientist friends for putting this important issue front and center for both believer and non-believer alike. All these “top” scientists in their field on the show and not one can explain what we are going to do if it is too late? What kind of machine or scientific invention can the top-notch scientists come up with to keep the planet habitable for humans? A CO2 cleaning machine? A super-hybrid plant that soaks up all the CO2? No amount of automobile hybrids or birth control is going to stop it. Convincing people to turn down their air conditioning in the summer is only a granule of sand dropped in the bucket. What if this doesn’t help? Or do they think the planet can heal itself? I for one think this is a different monster than the ozone. Also, Evangelicals or not, why didn’t the scientists happen to mention that the planet has never been a stable place, most of the time not being a very nice playground for mammals? Maybe extinction is a natural planet cycle. If that is so then we must do what we have always done to survive. Manipulate by any means necessary and “pray” it works. Poster: Edward C. Wolthausen Comment: I'm sure that God has things well under control. This spell of global warming is probably one small cycle in the grand scheme of things. Our biggest task is to find a way to unite all people against the tyrants of the world, and convince all that their actions toward their fellows totally affect their own eternity. IT'S ABOUT TIME ! |
