Comment: I ws impressed about the homeless program. I am a Life Skills/housing specialist for a homeless shelter. I would like to have this program implemented into my program. Footie now has a clear advantage for future success and will most likely stay sober and take his pschotropic medications on schedule. Footie knows what loss really could be because he has a taste of living middles class and having the opportunity to prove to himself that he is capable of maintaining this lifstyle and knowing his worthy to be saved.

Comment: Dear Mr. Brancaccio: I was very disappointed at your piece ‘Home at Last.” While we can all sympathize with Footy and enjoy his delight at having his own place at last, anyone would also agree that providing him with a two-bedroom apartment, middle-class furniture and TWO color TVs is ludicrous. This nonsense obviously reflects the fact that an abundance of federal dollars are being funneled into this program. You mentioned—albeit in passing—that many experts question the program’s focus on a very narrow—and challenging—section of the homeless population at the expense of other programs targeting the more invisible one. However, you only skimmed the surface of the criticisms. I wish you would have invited one of those critics to explain the shortcomings of the program or, more importantly, the opportunity cost of those funds—i.e., to which other programs those funds could be allocated and what other segments of the homeless population could be better served. For people like me, who sees you as one of the rising stars of independent journalism, the shallowness of this piece is particularly worrisome. Sincerely, Cecilia Zanetta

Comment: I watched the show early this morning. I was very impressed with the work of pathways. I hope they can continue to help these people. But, I believe that they should be working with families with small children. It is more effective to help a family with small children grow up in a decent clean home rather than the streets or shelters. The government needs to open more low income housing. The rental markets in this country are becoming more and more untouchable for the low income families and except of just one person more being homeless its a family of 3 or 4. Children are our future, we need to take care of them first. They need guidence so they don't fall into homelessnes as adults. Thus eradicating the problem rather than treating the symtoms of homelessness.

Comment: Footie has a disability check to be able to contribute 1/3 of his income to the housing program. What if the person has zero income? Do they get into the program at all?

Comment: I think it obscene that we have homeless people who mostly remain invisible at the same time we have millionaires and billionaires. What do you need after the first million? we are an unscrupulous immoral society based on power, money and class distinctions. We dpn't really care about the poor or powerless. We stack them in jails which are overcrowded and inhuman. We also let them fend for themselves on cold or hot streets. We as a species have to do better. The money wasted on political ads would better be used for more productive purposes. I, for one, am outraged. Yet, we have churches by the thousands and proclaim how moral we are, never noticing that one does not correlate with the other.
