About the Series: Staff Profile
Name: Alexandra DeanPosition: Associate Producer Most memorable experience at NOW: Attending the Democratic National Convention for our show Attacking Affirmative Action. I was standing right under the podium when nominee Barack Obama made his surprise appearance. I was knocked in the head a half dozen times by some over-enthusiastic supporters, but it was worth it to feel the exhilaration of the crowd. Guilty pleasure: Mad Men marathon. Haagen Dazs Dulce de Leche Frozen Yogurt. In the past: I worked as a researcher for Qball Productions, an independent film company run by a husband and wife team that made "Southern Comfort," 2001 Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner. A must see. Favorite NOW shows: I love the resilience of the people in this show. One family had so little money that they were only recently able to afford a modern toilet, but even so they are still heavily taxed in the state of Alabama. In this story I really saw how losing a home like these people did during the Cedar Fires in California can take a devastating toll on a person's life. Most of these folks thought they were adequately insured to rebuild their houses right away. As it turns out, they were wrong. This is one of my favorite NOW shows because it's the one where I got to meet Footie. Footie is funny and wonderfully honest guy, but he's also chronically homeless and struggling survive. One day he meets a man from an experimental government program that's putting homeless people in their own apartments. He gets his very own home and a new lease on life, and his expression when they hand him the key is absolutely priceless. Personal Essays by Alexandra: Finding Footie |
