Bio: Dr. Larry Brilliant

Why is Dr. Larry Brilliant optimistic?
Dr. Larry Brilliant, an epidemiologist, is the former director of Google's philanthropic arm, Google.org, and was one the original team members of the successful World Health Organization smallpox eradication program in India and South Asia.

Brilliant founded Seva Foundation, which has worked in dozens of countries to prevent blindness and has given sight back to nearly three million people. He founded several technology start-ups, including The Well, a worldwide discussion forum.

In 2008, Brilliant was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People. Also in 2008, Brilliant was given a Global Leadership Award by the United Nations and in 2006, he received the TED Prize.

Brilliant was most recently hired as president of the newly created Skoll Urgent Threats Fund. He also serves as chairman of the National Biosurveillance Advisory Subcommittee.
