Society and Community:
New Year, New Ideas
More on This Story:
In the first broadcast of 2004, NOW takes a look at some new ideas and the evolution of a very old one. Bill Moyers talks with Susan Neiman, author of EVIL IN MODERN THOUGHT, about evil in the post-9/11 world and about how people and societies deal with present and past atrocities or "acts of evil". David Brancaccio talks with Andrew Zolli about the science and philosophy of futurism. Learn more about these two thinkers and explore other interesting ideas from the links below.

Invitation

Last year at this time NOW asked for viewer suggestions and resolution about getting more involved in the community and the world. We renew that invitation now. Send us your ideas to now@thirteen.org.

Take a look at NOW's Action Ideas and some of New Year;s 2003 resolutions sent in by viewers for inspiration:

Keep in contact with my legislators and major newspapers in my area. Follow what Congress is making policy on and make my opinion known. --Gene

Find ways to share program resources like NOW and other educational programs with relatives, friends, students, neighbors and general community contacts in order to broaden the knowledge/idea base of all audiences. --Naseem

Look at the Universe and all earth's creatures with awe and wonder everyday.--Mary

Listen more, write at least one letter to the editor on the role of America in the world, write at least one letter to my congressman, Senators, Governor, and President, and reach out and improve the life of someone less well off in some tangible way.--Frank

Discover the underlying assumptions of those with whom I most disagree politically.-- George

Use a cash-back credit card for every purchase you make, and use your refund check to support non-profit groups you care about. This year I earned over $300 on my cash-back card, and used that "free" money to support six groups doing good work for the environment, workers' rights, and international development.--Mike

Read up on all candidates and vote in every election, and encourage others to vote, too.--Whiggery
