Joe was born in La Jolla California, raised on the water in New England. After working as a strernman commercial lobstering during and after high school, he went on to work in the commercial whale watching industry in 1995 with Cape Ann Whale Watch, Gloucester Massachusetts. In the winter of 1995, he joined the R/V Odyssey in San Diego, California. While on board he traveled to Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, Sea of Cortez, and Islas Revillagigedo with an NHK film crew documenting humpback whales.

After returning to Massachusetts, Joe received his Captains license from the United States Coast Guard and continued to work with Cape Ann Whale Watch, Captain Bills Whale Watch, Boston Harbor Cruises as well as Annisquam Yacht Club.

Now after returning to the Odyssey this year, he will be a valuable asset to the crew, with his extensive knowledge of the marine industry, vessel navigation and operation around marine mammals.
