Karli Merkens
Science Intern / Cook - Canary Islands & Gibraltar
Home: Portland, Oregon USA
Karli joins the crew of the Odyssey to feed her love of science, the outdoors, and travel. In May 2004, Karli graduated from Earlham College in Indiana, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. During her college career she participated in a number of research projects including research into bioinformatics/genomics/proteomics and a study of the biology of prions and prion diseases. Karli also completed a semester with the Williams-Mystic Maritime Studies Program, Mystic Seaport, Connecticut, which strengthened her passion for enjoying and studying the ocean.
From May to August 2004, Karli was an intern in the Marine/Benthic Ecology Lab of Dr. Kenneth Heck at Dauphin Island Sea Lab in Alabama. This past summer she interned with Ocean Alliance Cynde (Bierman) McInnis and Cape Ann Whale Watch.
After 1-2 years of internships, jobs, and other experiences Karli plans on returning to the academic world to pursue a graduate degree in biology/marine biology. Her particular interests for further study are the behavior and physiology of large mammals and birds (particularly cetaceans and marine birds). Armed with knowledge and education, Karli hopes to spend the future doing research and teaching biology.
