Klaus Martin Einstein
Born:1932
Died:1938, age 6
Hans Albert and Frieda move their family from Switzerland to South Carolina in 1938. Within months, their younger son, Klaus, dies of diphtheria. The disease is a familiar childhood threat, killing up to 15,000 Americans a year, mostly in the southeastern states. Also called the "strangling angel of children," the disease causes an inoperable membrane to grow across the airway, slowly suffocating the victim. (A diphtheria vaccine was available in the 1930s, but not widely used until the 1950s.)
