Portrait of Captain Dutton
A gifted storyteller, Captain Dutton also had a vise-like memory – both skills were invaluable for his geologic studies and writing. It is said that he once dictated 11,000 words without pause or reversal. In 1886, it was then-Major Dutton who directed the Cleetwood expedition that surveyed Crater Lake.
