Dear Detectives,
I just watched the episode about Ernie Pyle's typewriter (on station KRCB in Sonoma County, California), and just had to write to thank you for airing this story.
My father, Harvey Downey, was in the 77th Division on Okinawa when Pyle was there, and all his life he talked about the pain the men felt when Pyle was killed. My father was wounded on Okinawa about 2 weeks before Pyle died, and kept a photo of the sign the men erected to Pyle's memory on his desk.
Dad passed away in 2005. He would have loved this episode, and I wish I could have watched it with him.
Thank you.
