Hsiao-Ching notes that her family didn’t make a big production of closing their restaurant: “It simply closed for Christmas and never reopened!”

“We were all glad they closed the restaurant,” she says. Now, everyone in the family is more relaxed. “My parents have probably discovered what it means to be bored. They just take off on joyrides—they’ll drive to St. Louis, two hours away, for lunch.”
