Though the kids may think they’re learning about cooking or planting, Waters also emphasizes the lessons she hopes they’ll unlearn through the School Lunch Initiative. “I’m concerned we’re losing our culture,” Waters says. “When kids are learning the values of Fast Food Nation, it’s very serious for our traditions.” The School Lunch Initiative and programs like the Edible Schoolyard, she says, “bring them to values they’ll need to live on this planet, like being good stewards of the land and how to communicate with each other.”
