BUT HOW TO LET GO—GRACEFULLY

By the spring of 1965, the U.S. had approached North Vietnam with peace proposals-and been rejected. In the cartoonist's view, Pres. Johnson had gotten himself a "tiger by the tail." The caption makes it clear that peace would be desirable, even if difficult to achieve. The U.S. finally "let go" in 1973.
