OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALooking for a fun way to teach number recognition to the kiddos? Turn it into a game! This Fire Truck Number Hunt is easy to set up and a great way to learn math. Honk! Honk! Come on little firefighters! Let’s get started!

What You’ll Need

  • Post-It notes in multiple colors
  • marker
  • fire truck toys (or other emergency vehicles)

Prep for Play!

Write numbers onto your Post-It notes. These will be your “houses.” (I started off writing 1-20, changing colors at each decade to help my son see the difference between single digits, the teens, and twenty!)
Stick your houses in scrambled order onto a tabletop or floor.
Ask your child to place the houses in order.

Now it’s time to play! Call your child with an emergency. Tell your child which house the emergency is in. Then, have him/her drive a fire truck to that house! Keep calling with emergencies until you’ve covered all the numbers.

My son LOVED this activity. Our storyline soon expanded to incorporate tow trucks, helicopters, ambulances, and super heroes!
To extend this activity, add higher numbers to the game. Or, play it outside! Use chalk to write numbers on the pavement and have children run to each number to help out with an emergency!
