ACTIVITY #1
Help your child discover new ways of listening to music. Create a home listening library to discover different sounds and instrumental combinations.
Materials
- Recorded Music
- Index Cards
Activity
Look through your CDs at home to identify a number of different musical selections. You can include some of your own favorites from growing up to share with your child. Share the meaning of the music and encourage your child to also select a number of his or her favorites to add to the “home listening library.” Help your child organize the selections by different moods, instruments, dances, songs, etc. Then, create cards to include selections’ titles, composer, and countries.
Take it Further
Take your child for a “listening” field trip to the local library. Help him or her search for three selections from remote countries. For example, if she or he decides to explore Africa, then look for recordings that highlight native percussion instruments and vocal ensembles. On the other hand, if she or he decides to look for music from India, then select recordings featuring instruments native to India. Then ask about the differences in sounds and expressions.
