Curious Pancakes

Cook up some chemistry in the kitchen!

Materials

  • pancake recipe (from scratch or a mix)
  • ingredients and tools to make your recipe

Directions

Cooking with your child is a great way to explore math and science. Work together to mix, beat, and heat ingredients, and use all your senses to observe what happens. Be sure to talk about and practice kitchen safety together. (Supervise your child closely.)

1. Mix: Whip up some pancake batter from a mix or favorite recipe. Let your child help count, measure, and mix. Notice what happens to the dry ingredients when you add the milk or water.

2. Cook: Put some butter in a hot frying pan. Ask: What's happening to the butter? What do you see, smell, and hear? Let your child pour batter into the pan and watch the pancake cook. Discuss what you both see and smell. Ask: What do you notice? How is the batter changing? What's making the batter turn into a pancake? What do you think will happen when we flip the pancake?

3. Eat: Sit down together and enjoy your pancakes! While you eat, talk about the experience. Ask: What other foods change when they are cooked? What other foods would you like to make together?

Take It Further

Decorate your pancakes with fruit slices, berries, and raisins. Can you make a pancake that looks like George? How about your Uncle Joe?
