How to Make a Spinner

How Many Times?

Here’s a fun way to build on children’s everyday interest in counting.

Materials

  • Game spinner with numbers or a pair of dice (or just one)
  • Index cards or paper and scissors
  • Marker

To make a “How Many Times” game, you’ll need a game spinner with numbers on it or dice. For the direction cards, use index cards or cut paper into 3 x 5 inch pieces. The children could help you think of directions to write on the cards. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Clap your hands.
  • Whisper “no, thank you.”
  • Turn around.
  • Touch your toes.
  • Shout “yes, please.”
  • Say your name.
  • Knock on the floor.

Mix up the cards and let the children take turns drawing a card. After a card is drawn, spin the spinner or roll the dice to see how many times to do whatever the card says. For instance, if the spinner stops on four, and the card says “Turn around,” the child turns around four times.
