Making bird feeders brings me back to my days in the Brownies. I want my girls to experience the same outdoorsy fun—what better way than with an easy feeder? It's a great way to learn more about the birds in your neighborhood: what they look like close up, what they eat, and how they sing! You'll be able to watch them at close range. When your feeder is done, simply get out your binoculars and get ready to watch some birds!
Materials:
- toilet paper roll
- knife (plastic or butter)
- peanut butter (or soy nut, almond, or other nut butter)
- bird seed
- paper plate
- binoculars (optional)
Instructions
Spread peanut butter on the toilet paper roll. You can scoop it out with a knife, but sometimes it’s more fun to spread it with your fingers. We used organic peanut butter, but any variety works.- Roll the peanut butter-covered TP roll in bird seed until it’s fully covered.
- Once it’s covered in bird seed, hang the bird feeder on the end of a tree branch. The other option is to put a string through the hole and hang it on the branch.
- Take out your binoculars and watch those hungry birds fill their bellies
You can try different types of bird seed to see which the birds in your neighborhood prefer—but be warned: they’ll keep coming back for more!
